Niederhorn

Introduction

The Niederhorn, 1950 meters, is in my humble opinion the nicest balcony over the Bernese Alps. The panorama is unique. This pearl of the Alps is just above the village of Beatenberg, a few kilometers away from Interlaken, in canton Bern.

To get to the Niederhorn, there's a cog train from lake Thun to Beatenberg (or alternatively a bus from Interlaken) and then a gondola that goes to the summit. Of course, you can also walk ! There's plenty of great paths. At the top, an easy ridge offers a 360° panorama. A hotel-restaurant with playground for kids will make families happy.

The MTB lovers can loop around the Niederhorn. It's not too difficult. It starts with a solid climb up to the Grünenbergpass, followed by a technical downhill (I fell badly :-) ) and some up and downs to get back to Beatenberg. It's properly sign posted, we are in Switzerland. It takes nearly 5 hours I think.

Photos

On this panorama, taken in 2011, we see the antenna of the Niederhorn to the right side and the Bernese Alps on the background, especially the famous Eiger/Mönch/Jungfrau trilogy. If you know where to look at, you can see a pixel that belongs to the Mont-Blanc :-).

For your pleasure ::

On the next picture, the Justital, a nice valley to the west of the Niederhorn, is below the clouds and so is the swiss plateau, further north.

The path follows the ridge eastward in the direction of Gemmanalphorn. There's also a path going down back to Beatenberg-Waldweg.

On the top of the Gemmenalphorn, looking west. On the left side, the nice pyramid is the Niesen. The Simmental valley starts between this one and the Stockhorn (that sharp mount in the center of the pic). Below us is the Justital.

The path which goes down to Beatenberg is magical isn't it ?

In winter, it's not too bad either ! The resort offers nearly 20 km of slopes. Not big but the great view and the off-piste area make it up. Give it some powder and you'll see what I mean: no danger, only pure fun.

Nice view on the Shreckhorn, one of my favorites over there.

Also a great view on the Niesen, the perfect pyramid.

You can rent sledges at the top of the Gondola and give it back at Beatenberg. Very cool slope.

A peine modifiés :

Finally, I've got to mention the sunsets. They are worth the travel... Barely modified  :
