Dans les alpes valaisannes, le Bishorn (4153 m) c'est mon premier 4000 ! J'en parle encore avec émotion :-). Il est surnommé le "4000 des dames" à cause de sa facilité (classé 'F'). Cela dit, mieux vaut être en bonne forme physique. Le premier jour on monte de Zinal (1670m) dans le Val d'Annivers vers la cabane de Tracuit (3256 m), soit 1700 mètres de montée avec le gros sac... Le second jour on se lève avant l'aube pour faire le Bishorn puis on redescent à Zinal, soit 2500 mètres de denivelé négatif (aurevoir les genous). Vous aurez besoin d'un guide car il faut passer sur un glacier avec de belles crevasses. Rien de technique ni vraiment dangereux, mais y aller sans guide n'est pas une bonne idée... A aucun moment l'ascension ne nécessite d'utiliser les mains ou le piolet. Seuls les crampons sont nécessaires et bien sur il faut s'encorder (prévoir donc des baudriers). Tout le matériel peut se louer à Zinal, le guide fournira la corde.
Est-il utile de préciser que c'est beau à couper le souffle ? Une randonnée magique si la météo vous est favorable.
In the valaisian Alps, the Bishorn was my first 4000 meters. Still gives me goose bumps when I talk about it :-). Its nickname (~ "the ladies 4000m") implies that it is easy (classified as 'F'). However, you should be in good shape. The first day, you climb from Zinal (1670m alt.) in the val d'Anniviers up to the Tracuit hut (3256 m), that is 1700 m ascent with the heavy backpack in thin air... The second day, after an early start, you climb up to the Bishorn and then all the way down back to Zinal (2500 m descent, bye knees...) !
A guide is required as you'll walk through a glacier with crevasses. Nothing really technical or dangerous, but going without a guide might be your last great idea ! You will never have to use your hands or an axe. Only crampons are necessary, and of course a rope and a harness. All the gear can be rented in Zinal. The guide will provide the rope.Description
La rando démarre donc de Zinal, village au fond du val d'Annivers, une vallée latérale au sud de la grande vallée du Rhone, dans le canton du Valais.
So the hike starts in Zinal, a village at the end of the val d'Anniviers, a side valley going southward from the main Rhone valley, in the canton Valais.
On prend le chemin de la cabane de Tracuit, sur le versant est du val. Il faut profiter de la végétation, la rocaille prendra bientôt la relève. Le val continue au loin, butant sur la Pointe de Zinal et plus généralement sur la 'couronne impériale' (une succession de 4000 mythiques). On commence d'ailleurs à voir la Dent Blanche (4350 m).
We follow the path going to the 'Cabane de Tracuit', on the east side of the valley. Let's enjoy the flowers now as it will become rocky very soon. The valley continues further, only stopped by the 'Pointe de Zinal' and more generally by the 'imperial crown' (a parabolic-shaped range of famous four-thousanders). We start to see the Dent Blanche (~ white tooth, 4350 m).
Un coup d'oeil en arrière, vers le nord. On voit Zinal en bas, et le val d'Anniviers qui descend vers la vallée du Rhone. Au fond, au-dela du Rhone, c'est les alpes de Berne, je crois même voir le glacier de Plaine Morte, au dessus de Crans-Montana.
Looking behind us, to the north, we see Zinal at the bottom and the Anniviers valley reaching the Rhone valley. On the background, beyond the Rhone, are the Bernese Alps. I think we even see the Plaine Morte glacier, the one above Crans-Montana.
On monte, le val d'Annivers toujours en contrebas. La Dent Blanche devient plus evidente à présent...
We keep climbing, still with the val d'Anniviers behind us. You cannot miss the Dent Blanche now...
La couronne se dessine plus précisemment. Sur la droite, toujours la Dent Blanche et la délicate montagne sur la gauche c'est le Zinalrothorn (4220 m). Au milieu et au fond une petite pointe blanche apparait, l'Obergabelhorn (4062 m). Enfin, le Besso, gros rocher noir au second plan, trone au milieu de cette couronne.
The 'crown' is now more obvious. On the right side the Dent Blanche is impressive. On the left side, this lovely mountain is the Zinalrothorn (4220 m). In the middle, on the background, a tiny white peak appears, the Obergabelhorn (4062 m). At the center of the crown the Besso, that big black rock, enjoys the view.
Enfin, la cabane de Tracuit. Il était temps... Le Bishorn, sur la gauche, s'offre enfin à nos yeux. La crête continue sur la droite vers le Weisshorn (4505 m), le maître des lieux.
The hut is here ! It was about time... We finally see the Bishorn, the peak on the left. The ridge continues towards the Weisshorn (4505 m), Lord of the area.
On a changé de vallée. En regardant vers le nord, on tombe sur le glacier de Tourtemagne (Turtmanngletscher) qui s'écoule vers la magnifique Turtmanntal, une petite vallée sauvage coincée entre le val d'Anniviers et la Mattertal (la vallée montant à Zermatt). Au fond, toujours les alpes de Berne.
It's a new valley now. Looking north is the Turtmann glacier, that flows into the magnificent Turtmanntal, a tiny wild side-valley, stuck between the val d'Anniviers and the Mattertal (the valley of Zermatt). On the background, the Berner Oberland.
De la cabane, la récompense est la hauteur de l'effort. Le Zinalrothorn à gauche et l'Obergabelhorn nous saluent. Il est beau ce Zinalrothorn non ? On le carresserait presque...
The reward is fantastic, isn't it ? The Zinalrothorn and the Obergabelhorn say hi. That Zinalrothorn is one stunning peak, don't you wanna caress it ?

Second jour. On se lève avant le soleil. Dur dur, mais au moins on assiste à un superbe lever de soleil. Il nous reste environ 900 mètres à monter.
Second day. We get up before sunshine. Tough, but at least we saw a gorgeous sunshine on the mountains. There's a 900 meters climb now ahead of us.
Nous ne sommes pas seuls... C'est un sommet populaire. D'ailleurs mieux reserver votre guide et nuit en cabane à l'avance.
We aren't alone... It's a popular climb. By the way, make sure you book the guide and the hut in time.
Ca n'a l'air de rien, mais ca monte dur et l'oxygène est rare ! Les deux sommets du Bishorn sont tout prêts ! On fera celui de droite.
It's steeper than it looks and the air is now thin ! The two Bishorn summits are closer though. We'll make the right one.

Vers le nord, une vue assez irréelle sur les alpes de Berne et le glacier d'Aletsch, le plus long des alpes, à facile 60 ou 70 km de nous.
To the North, quite an unreal view over the Bernese Alps and the Aletsch glacier, the longest in the Alps, at least 60 or 70 km away from us.
Enfin vers le sud-est, on domine la Mattertal, la vallée de Zermatt. Au fond, le Monte Rosa (4554m), le plus haut sommet suisse (quoique sur la frontière avec l'Italie). Sur sa gauche, on voit l'Allalinhorn, puis l'Alphubel (remarquable par sa 'platitude'), le Täschhorn et enfin le Dom des Mischabel (4545m), plus haut sommet entièrement en Suisse. Derrière les Mischabels c'est la vallée de Saas-Fee.
Finally, to the south-east, we tower above the Mattertal, the Zermatt valley. On the background, the Monte Rosa (4554 m), the highest swiss mountain (though shared with Italy). On its left is the Allalinhorn, then the Alphubel (remarkably flat), the Täschhorn and finally the Dom (4545 m), the highest peak entirely in Switzerland. Behind these Mischabel peaks is the Saas-Fee valley.
C'est l'heure de descendre :-(. On profite un dernier instant de cette vue hallucinante sur les alpes de Berne. C'est moi ou on se rend compte de la rotondité de la terre ?
Time to go down :-(. One last peep over the Bernese Alps. Is it me or do we already see the roundness of the earth ?
Juste pour rire, voici une photo prise pendant une randonnée de Crans-Montana vers Plainte-morte, sur le versant sud des alpes de Berne. Au zoom, on comprends pourquoi le Bishorn ("deux cornes") s'appelle ainsi. On comprends aussi que le Weisshorn est un ton au dessus... On distingue les traces laissées par les chanceux qui ont fait l'ascension du Bishorn ce jour là. La cabane de Tracuit est juste derrière la grosse montagne noire (les Diablons) au second plan sur la droite.
Just for fun, here's a picture taken when I went 2 years later from Crans-Montana to Plaine-Morte, on the south side of the Bernese Alps. You understand now from where the name Bishorn ("two horns") is coming... It's also clear why the Weisshorn is the master. Look closely, you'll see the trace left by the lucky guys who climbed the Bishorn on that day. The Cabane de Tracuit is just behind this big back mountain ('Les Diablons') on the right.
Conclusion
Le Bishorn est parfait pour un premier 4000. Facile techniquement et ambiance de rêve. Je conseille vivement...
