Pour cette belle journée de fin d'été, j'avais choisi une arête qui me faisait de l'oeil depuis quelques temps: la Stieregrat. Elle est située entre le Kaiseregg (au dessus de Schwarzsee, canton de Fribourg) et le Widdergalm (au dessus de Boltigen, dans la Simmental bernoise). Pris énormément de plaisir à la parcourir. La vue depuis le Widdergalm est exceptionnelle. Beaucoup de photos à partager.
For this lovely end of summer day, I chose a ridge on my radar for a while: the Stieregrat. It's between Kaiseregg (above Schwarzsee in Fribourg canton) and Widdergalm (above Boltigen in the Bernese Simmental). I had a lot of fun climbing it. The views from Widdergalm are exceptional. Je n'ai pas trouvé de topo, si ce n'est des récits dans Hikr, mal traduits par Google. C'est une randonnée T6 (sur une échelle de 1 à 6) avec des passages d'escalades de II. C'est exposé, non balisé et à ne pas mettre entre toutes les mains !
I couldn't find a topo, apart from stories in Hikr, badly translated by Google. It's a T6 hike (on a scale from 1 to 6) with some grade II rock climbing. It's exposed, no signposts and not for everyone!
Schwarzsee. J'étais là y a quelques semaines avec les enfants pour randonner en face puis à La Patta. J'aime bien ici.

Rapidement à Riggisalp avec le télésiège, le Kaiseregg en face. Le soleil est pile sur le Kaisereggpass. Le chemin de randonnée fait un long zig-zag pour y aller, moi je vais foncer à travers l'alpage, entre les sapins.

C'est un peu raide mais rien d'alarmant. Ça fait gagner du temps, montée bien efficace.

Et me voila à la croix. Ça m'a mis 1h10 depuis Riggisalp au lieu des 2h40 annoncés. Pas si mal. J'étais déjà venu ici en 2009 avec notamment mon vieux compère Urs. A l'époque, le sommet était le but, aujourd'hui c'est simplement la marche d'approche :-).
Cross. Took me 1h10 from Riggisalp instead of the 2h40 standard. Not so bad. I was there already back in 2009 with my old friend Urs. Back then, the summit was the goal, today it's just the approach walk :-).

Et c'est parti pour la descente du Kaiseregg, coté NE. Je ne sais pas du tout à quoi m'attendre, mélange d'excitation (90%) et d'inquiétude (10%).

Bon c'est vrai que c'est parfois bien exposé mais rien n'est vraiment dur. C'est du ~ T4-T5, faut mettre un peu les mains et faire attention à ne pas glisser. Ça passe bien je trouve. Et puis surtout, on suit une vague sente !
OK, that's exposed but it's fine overall, nothing tricky. It's T4-T5 I'd say, you have to use sometimes your hands and try not to slip. It goes fine I think. And there's a small path.

Du point 2045 sous le Kaiseregg, la sente traverse vers un col qui mène au point 2073, départ de la Stieregrat.

Attaque des difficultés ! C'est du bonheur en fait. Le rocher est bon, les mouvements simples, on crapahute tranquille. C'est exposé. Il faut être dégourdi et à l'aise pour venir en solo ici.
Let's get serious now! It's actually heaven, the rock is good, the moves are fun, easy scrambling. But it's exposed, you need to be comfy in that level to be alone here.
La belle vue sur le Kaiseregg. Jamais vu autant d'Edelweiss, des centaines le long de cette arête.

Quelques passages épicés comme celui-ci peuvent s'éviter, une sente passe sur la droite (dans le sens vers le Widdergalm, cette photo est prise en me retournant).
Some spicy parts can be avoided, like that one, using a small path on the right side (when walking toward Widdergalm, I took that pic afterward turning around).
Des moments de respiration entre passages rocheux.
And some moments where you can breath.
J'ai aussi parfois cherché la difficulté, qui reste raisonnable.
Sometimes looking for troubles, though it's reasonable.
Me voila au passage le plus impressionnant de l'arête, un petit rasoir sympa. Je ne pense pas qu'il s'évite facilement. Loin de moi l'idée de l'éviter d'ailleurs :-).
Now at the most impressive part of the ridge, a nice little razor. I don't think you can avoid it easily. Why should you anyway :-)
Court passage d'une dizaine de mètres très effilé mais sur du bon rocher et avec des prises. Du plaisir. Le T6 est ici.
It's a 10 meters really narrow rocky ridge, rock is good and there are foot and hand holes. A treat. T6 is here.
Me voila près du point 2159, la plupart des passages rocheux sont derrière maintenant. Vraiment super à faire.

Puis rapidement, une belle sente sur la crête sommitale herbeuse. La difficulté chute largement, T3 ?

Reste un court passage rocheux et me voila sorti. Le reste de la sente herbeuse derrière. Le final c'est une pente herbeuse facile.

Et voila la croix ! J'ai mis 2h30 environ la croix du Kaiseregg.

J'accorde 5 étoiles à la vue depuis ce sommet, comme souvent depuis les pré-alpes. On voit vraiment beaucoup de choses. Faisons le tour. A l'est, la Simmental en dessous, la Niesengrat en face et les hauts sommets de l'Oberland au fond.
I'll grant 5 stars for the view here, as often in the pre-alps. You really see many things. Let's take a tour. Looking east: Simmental below, Niesengrat away and the highest Oberland summits on the background.

Bon, croûte cassée, continuons. La descente du Widdergalm est simple et sur une sente. Joli vue sur la vallon Walop en dessous et son Walopsee.
OK, done with lunch, let's move on. The Widdergalm downhill is an easy path. Nice views on the Walop glen below and the Walopsee.
Alpage/pasture Vortel.

Au fond du vallon, le Kaisereggpass en face. Je me dépèche, croyez le ou non mais j'ai une réunion par téléphone pour le boulot à prendre, et évidemment ce vallon n'a pas de réseau. Me doutant en trouver au col, je demande à mes jambes un dernier effort.
At the end of the valley, Kaisereggpass above. I'm going fast. Believe it or not, I must take a telephone conference for work. And of course there's no signal in that valley. I was pretty sure there is signal at the pass, so I asked my legs one last effort.

Superbe, j'ai adoré cette arête qui m'était inconnue, très confort dans ce niveau donc que du plaisir. Attention si ce n'est pas votre cas, une corde et un pote serait peut-être utile. La vue au sommet m'a bluffé et m'a renvoyé à beaucoup de souvenirs. Je serais bien resté à contempler et méditer quelques heures. Vu personne sur l'arête. Elle peut sûrement se faire dans le sens inverse que j'ai choisi.
Awesome, I loved that ridge which was unknown to me. I was very comfy in that level so pure treat. Careful, if it's not your case then bring a rope and a partner. The views from that summit were fantastic, brought back many memories. I wish I could have stayed there for a couple hours to medidate. I saw no one on the ridge. You can surely do that loop the other way around.
