Plaine Morte

La veille, Laurent et moi étions montés à la Wildstrubelhütte, entre Lenk et Crans-Montana. Aujourd'hui on va aller faire un petit tour sur le fameux glacier de Plaine Morte, avant de redescendre à Lenk. Une deuxième journée en haute montagne avec des vues géniales et quelques frissons.

The day before, Laurent and I went up to the Wildstrubelhütte, between Lenk and Crans-Montana. Today, we'll do a little stroll on the famous glacier Plaine Morte, before going back down to Lenk. A second day high up in the mountains with some amazing views and a few thrills.






On se lève vers 6h du mat avec une jolie pleine lune.

We woke up around 6am with a nice full moon.

Départ de la cabane. On s'encorde, pour rigoler et pratiquer. Direction le col Wisshorelücke, à 200 mètres au dessus.

Start from the hut. Rope on, for fun and practice. We head to the Wisshorelücke pass, 200 meters above us.

Le monde appartient à ceux qui se lèvent tôt ! Au premier plan le Schnidehore et le Wildhorn. Là-bas, le Valais sous la mer de nuage. Le Mont Blanc, tout au fond.

Le col n'est plus bien loin. Tout ça vaut bien un panorama.

Au sud, le val d'Anniviers et une belle parade valaisanne. De gauche à droite: Bishorn et Weisshorn, puis Zinalrothorn, Obergabelhorn, Cervin et Dent Blanche. Superbe non ?

A l'est, le glacier de Plaine Morte. Derrière les nuages qui arrivent, le Wildstrubel (3244 m) et son éperon sud-ouest. Le but est de le monter puis traverser sa face ouest pour redescendre sur Lenk. Mon idée était de faire une approche en arc de cercle pour éviter la zone crevassée au centre nord du glacier.

To the east, the Plaine Morte glacier. Behind the coming clouds is the Wildstrubel (3244 m) and its south-west spur. The goal is to climb it and then traverse the west face to go back down to Lenk. I planned a circular arc approach to avoid the crevasses area in the northern center part of the glacier.

On prends pied sur le glacier. Il semble totalement bouché. Ça n’empêche pas Laurent de stresser en pensant corps mort et mouflage :-).

Now walking on the glacier. Seems completely filled up, so pretty safe. Still, Laurent kept thinking about the rescue techniques :-).

La préoccupation va vite changer en fait. Le brouillard nous tombe dessus en un rien de temps. Rapidement on est dans l'enfer blanc, on ne voit pas à 20 mètres. J'avais pris un cap pour le Wildstrubel avant de descendre. Je tente une approche à la boussole mais c'est pas si facile, les distances sont trompeuses. Changement de plan, on remonte à la cabane et on passera par Iffigenalp pour revenir sur Lenk. Demi-tour, en suivant nos traces !

Actually, the concern will quickly change. The fog fell down on us very quickly. Welcome to white hell, cannot see 20 meters ahead. I looked at my compass before going down and noticed the direction towards Wildstrubel. Nevertheless, this is not easy, distances are deceiving. I gave up and changed plan: we head back to the hut and come down to Lenk via Iffigenalp. U-turn, following our tracks!

Pfiou, après une grosse heure dans le blanc, c'est sympa de revoir du bleu. Là haut, le Wisshorelücke. On y remonte donc...

Phew, after a bit more than an hour in the white, blue feels nice. Up there that's Wisshorelücke. We are going back up there...

Le col est repassé, on voit à nouveau la Wildstrubelhütte. C'est tout bon ici fieu.

We went up the pass again and facing the Wildstrubelhütte. Feels really good here.

Bon, les ennuis reviennent. Le brouillard, à nouveau, sur le plateau du Rawil. Là encore on navigue à la boussole, à la recherche du chemin pour Iffigenalp. Chat échaudé craint la neige, on prends notre temps et on ouvre bien grand les yeux. De balises en cairns, on finit par arriver à ce panneau béni des dieux. Iffigenalp, 1h45 ! Yes, fin du stress !

Troubles, again. Fog, again. On the Rawil plateau this time. Again, we need to use the compass, looking for a path to Iffigenalp. Once frozen, twice shy. So we took our time, eyes wide open. Thanks to some markers and cairns, we finally found this signpost, blessed by the Gods. Iffigenalp, 1h45 ! Stress time's over.

On a évidemment croisé personne de tout le week-end...

Obvioulsy, we didn't see anyone in the whole week-end...

... à part peut-être quelques chamois.

La descente vers Iffigenalp mérite le détour.

The dowhill to Iffigenalp is worth the detour.

Je devrais randonner plus souvent en décembre, c'est sympa en fait.

I should hike more often in December. It's quite nice in fact.

On passe Iffigenalp, on arrive à la belle chute d'eau Iffigfall. J'étais passé par là à l'été 2013, décor assez différent.

We passed Iffigenalp and stared at the nice waterfall Iffgfall. I was there during summer 2013, but looked quite different.

Et nous revoilà à Lenk ! Les pieds et les jambes n'en peuvent plus, et je ne vous parle même pas des épaules, broyées par le poids des sacs. Seule bonne nouvelle, il fait 1°C dans la vallée, j'ai l'impression qu'il fait chaud comparé à là haut :-).

Back in Lenk. Our feet and legs can't take it anymore, not even mentionning the shoulders, crushed by the weight of our bags. The only good news is that it's 1°C in the valley, almost feels warm compared to up there :-).

Gros week-end ! Bien physique et quelques stress mais très bonne expérience. La fatigue s'en va, les souvenirs restent et l'envie de remonter revient très vite ! Merci à Laurent d'avoir participé à cette belle aventure. Vivement la prochaine !
