Wildhorn

This day is part of a mini raid organized by the Club Alpin. The day before we went up to the Wildhornhütte (2303 m).  Today, we go up to the Wildhorn (3248 m). A beautiful summit on my radar for years. The group will then continue to the Wildstrubelhütte. With a solid cold, I had to escape and go back down alone to the car. Turned out to be a good idea, it took them 7 hours then to reach the hut :-).

Route

Si j'ai bien compris, on a suivi à peu près cet itinéraire.

I think this is what we did. After the Wildhorn, we went down to Chilchli, where we split. Then I went down to Wildhornhütte, Iffigsee, Iffigenalp and Pöschenried.

Cotation globale ski : PD-.

Ski global grade: PD-. Very few technical difficulties, we had to put the ski crampons for just 30 meters. Barely exposed, no crevasse, great conditions altogether.

Topos: Camptocamp.

De bon matin, on laisse la cabane derrière.

Early in the morning, we left the hut behind.

Starting with a nice snowy ridge, leading us below the Chilchli, that summit we see.

Now we're on the Tungelgletscher. Yes, this is still German speaking Switzerland, canton Berne. French speaking Valais is up there at the pass.

Coup d’œil derrière.

Looking behing me.

We arrived at the pass, border between BE and VS. Behind Raffaele, the valaisan Alps. From left: Bishorn and Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Obergabelhorn (right behind Raf's head) and then Dent Blanche. The last one ? I dunno :-).

Towards east, the Schnidehore and the Bernese Alps. The big one in the middle, that's the Bietschhorn. The 'king of the Valais' is on the agenda this summer !

Mes beaux skis tout neufs.

Introducing my brand new skis.

After the pass, we are stepping on the Ténéhet glacier. Now it's straight on, up to the summit. Only 300 meters climb but felt like 3000 to me...

At the summit, the wind is incredible, lifts up the snow and whips the braves with it.

Victoire !

Victory !

To the west, the Mont Blanc and Grand Combin ranges.

Panorama stupéfiant. Pilatus, Eiger, Jungfrau, Aletschhorn, Biestschhorn, Weissmies, les Mischabels, Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Dent Blanche, Grand Combin et j'en passe beaucoup ! La vallée du Rhône à nos pieds. Exceptionnel.

Stunning panorama. Pilatus, Eiger, Jungfrau, Aletschhorn, Biestschhorn, Weissmies, les Mischabels, Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Dent Blanche, Grand Combin among many many others. The Rhône valley is down there. Exceptionnal. I would have put a 10 if only I could see the Matterhorn.

We came back down to Chilchli. I left the group putting on the skins again to go up to Schnidehore (ahead). I'm going down.

Crossed quite a lot of skiers going up.

J'ai traversé l'Iffigsee à ski. Amusant.

I skied on the Iffigsee, that was fun.

Actually, from the Wildhorn it's a 2000 meters downhill. I left some nice tracks !

Almost in Iffigenalp. I hiked here last summer (article), at least I don't need a map...

Jolie ballade.

After Iffigenalp, I followed the road, which actually is more like a sledge slope. Very usefull to do the last 300 meters of descent. Nice stroll.

Exceptionnal day. Shame that bloody cold ruin it a bit but I'll remember the Wildhorn for a long time. It's gorgeous over there. Thanks Raffaele for taking me up there. I might just go back there in summer. Dante, what about mountain biking to the top :-) ?
