Plaine Morte

The day before, Laurent and I went up to the Wildstrubelhütte, between Lenk and Crans-Montana. Today, we'll do a little stroll on the famous glacier Plaine Morte, before going back down to Lenk. A second day high up in the mountains with some amazing views and a few thrills.

We woke up around 6am with a nice full moon.

Start from the hut. Rope on, for fun and practice. We head to the Wisshorelücke pass, 200 meters above us.

The early birds caught the worm ! On the foreground, the Schnidehore and Wildhorn. Down there below the clouds, the Bas-Valais area. On the background, Mont Blanc!

Le Grand Combin (4314 m).

 Cool !

Le col n'est plus bien loin. Tout ça vaut bien un panorama.

The pass isn't far away. It's worth a panorama isn't it?

Col, à 2904 mètres. Ambiance artique :-).

Pass, 2904 meters. Artic atmosphere :-).

Maybe the nicest view over the Mont Blanc range.

Looking south, the Anniviers valley and a nice valaisan parade. From left to right: Bishorn and Weisshorn, then Zinalrothorn, Obergabelhorn, Matterhorn and Dent Blanche. Great isn't it ?

To the east, the Plaine Morte glacier. Behind the coming clouds is the Wildstrubel (3244 m) and its south-west spur. The goal is to climb it and then traverse the west face to go back down to Lenk. I planned a circular arc approach to avoid the crevasses area in the northern center part of the glacier.

Now walking on the glacier. Seems completely filled up, so pretty safe. Still, Laurent kept thinking about the rescue techniques :-).

Actually, the concern will quickly change. The fog fell down on us very quickly. Welcome to white hell, cannot see 20 meters ahead. I looked at my compass before going down and noticed the direction towards Wildstrubel. Nevertheless, this is not easy, distances are deceiving. I gave up and changed plan: we head back to the hut and come down to Lenk via Iffigenalp. U-turn, following our tracks!

On y remonte donc...

Phew, after a bit more than an hour in the white, blue feels nice. Up there that's Wisshorelücke. We are going back up there...

We went up the pass again and facing the Wildstrubelhütte. Feels really good here.

Iffigenalp, 1h45 ! Yes, fin du stress !

Troubles, again. Fog, again. On the Rawil plateau this time. Again, we need to use the compass, looking for a path to Iffigenalp. Once frozen, twice shy. So we took our time, eyes wide open. Thanks to some markers and cairns, we finally found this signpost, blessed by the Gods. Iffigenalp, 1h45 ! Stress time's over.

Obvioulsy, we didn't see anyone in the whole week-end...

... à part peut-être quelques chamois.

... apart from some chamois maybe.

La descente vers Iffigenalp mérite le détour.

The dowhill to Iffigenalp is worth the detour.

I should hike more often in December. It's quite nice in fact.

We passed Iffigenalp and stared at the nice waterfall Iffgfall. I was there during summer 2013, but looked quite different.

Back in Lenk. Our feet and legs can't take it anymore, not even mentionning the shoulders, crushed by the weight of our bags. The only good news is that it's 1°C in the valley, almost feels warm compared to up there :-).

Gros week-end !

Big week-end ! Physical and sometimes stressfull but fantastic experience. The fatigue will go away, the memories stay and the will to go back comes back quickly. Thanks to Laurent for joining this adventure. Looking forward to the next one!

Laurent and I talked many times of doing a week-end in the Alps. From the low lands he finally came, to the Oberland. He wanted an adventure and I did not want to disappoint him :-). Two days of winter hiking, full of emotions.

______________

Oberried (Ober Simmental, Lenk) > Wildstrubelhütte (2790 m), via Flueseehütte.

+1900m, -200m, 8 h.

Early and fresh start. We are at 1100 meters altitude and winter finally arrived.

At first, easy hike on big trails with signposts. Strange atmosphere, very quiet. Some mountain goats and chamois, that's all.

The way up below the Flueseehütte is pretty steep and the path was frosty and very slippery. We'll end up putting the crampons on.

Future cascade de glace.

Icefall to be.

Ça manque de soleil, pas de charme.

It's lacking sun, not charm.

Le brouillard nous tombe dessus.

Fog fell upon us.

I put the camera away for a while. Near Hindere Tierberg, we finally crossed the fog. I wasn't expecting much anymore so it felt great.

So the view got pretty nice. To the north, the Simmental is below the clouds. Painfully coming to the surface, Giferspitz on the left side and Albristhorn on the right one. To the very right hand side, the foothills of Wildstrubel. On the opposite side is Laufbodehore (2703 m).

Zooming on Albristhorn and Gsür. It's fun to see from that angle the whole hike I did last October.

Looking south, we see the Rexigletscher glacier, safety valve of the much bigger glacier Plaine Morte, straight behind. We'll make a little tour on it tomorrow.

After lunch, come back to work, there's still quite a lot to do, around 650 meters ascent and not the easiest ones...

Problem was the higher the deeper the snow. And I didn't want to take the snowshoes :-). The way up to the Tiebergsattel pass, straight ahead, won't be easy.

Laurent ouvre. Je m'accroche.

Laurent leads the way, I'm trying to follow.

Gorgeous view behind us, over the Wildstrubel.

Around 4pm, we made it to the pass. Down there, that's the Rawil area. We only need to go around those rocks on the left side and do the final climb (+200 m) to the hut. Well, easier said than done. Deep snow and little stress since the sun will set within an hour.

We got around and up. We're exhausted and barely enjoyed the great views. Below, the lake Rawilseeleni and further ahead the way down to Iffigenalp. We'll take this path tomorrow, but below a thick fog. You see some cairns that really helped us to get out of this small mess.

Hut is now on sight! Energy level is in free fall but the mood is getting better now.

Laurent strikes a pose before the magnificient Wildhorn. I went up on that one, on skis, last spring. Feels like years ago already, 2014 was pretty full...

Not easy to make it to that bloody hut, but the reward was beautiful.

It's 5 o'clock. The sun set and we open the door of the hut. We're knackered but we have a 5 stars winter dormitory just for us. A nice fire, a warm meal and the smiles came back quickly.

Belle aventure :-).

Quite an adventure :-). Tomorrow, a little tour on Plaine Morte and back down to Lenk, via Iffigenalp.
