I went back to the source, the Jungfrau region, on a beautiful summer day. My plan included a long and technical hike plus an off-piste ridge up to Schwarzmönch, a minor summit offering a fantastic view. Long and beautiful so many pics...

From Stechelberg, path to Hinteres Lauterbrunnental, then quickly turn left and follow the Rottalhütte path.

Chemin tranquille, on s’élève progressivement.

Easy path and view getting better and better. Ahead, the Gimmewald and Mürren villages pop up. I spent quite a lot of time over there, I basically discovered the Swiss alps here... On the background, my good old Schilthorn, the Swiss summit I climbed the most.

Lauterbrunnental ends here on the local Breithorn. It's a magnificient place too, water falls, flowers everywhere, glaciers.

Going up and enjoying the wilderness, between Silberhorn and Jungfrau foothills.

At the 2019 point, paths split, I'm taking the one to the Silberhornhütte, a pretty cool blue trail that traverses ahead.

La vue sur la Lauterbrunnental est top. On devine Petersgrat tient, super là bas.

Great views again on Lauterbrunnental. You can almost see Petersgrat, quite nice too over there.

Passage exposé mais protégé par une chaîne. Faut pas tomber ici.

Exposed section but equipped with a chain. Don't fall here.

Near the 2113 point, loose path but well marked. I really like this kind of path, you need to shutdown the brain and focus. It's a relief !

Another few equiped sections but with less exposition.

Reaching the final part: a long traverse on smooth slabs, below and around the Silberhorn (ahead).

I finally spotted that black monk, the Schwarzmönch, at the end (left) of that ridge. But first, let's reach the hut (right).

And there is the hut, at the pass. Progress below these rocky bars. Under the hut, the path ends in a cirque, equipped with chain and ladder. Nothing bad...

Derniers mètres avant la cabane.

Last meters before the hut.

Tiny, spartan and quiet, well it's a hell of a climb to get there and it's mainly for Silberhorn and a tough Jungfrau ridge. I don't stop but head to that pile of rocks behind, leading to the ridge, the 'Ufem Schwarzen grat'.

Pas trop dur et cairné.

Fairly simple and with cairns.

And there's the ridge. It takes max half an hour to get to Schwarzmönch on the other side. It starts with this chain. The first step can be avoided, going left. I tried the step, it's narrow and exposed but the exit seemed too risky, so I went back and around...

That's the exit of this first step. I didn't want to dare the devil on these loose piles of plates :-)

The rest is not so difficult, obvious and easy path with a few more steps.

The next one, said the cairns, can be avoided using a narrow and very exposed ledge on the right side. I wonder if it's not better to just climb directly...

Then easy. Here I intensified the yellow but this rock is really yellow-ish. They should call it the Gelbmönch in fact.

Dernière ressaut, sans problème. Assez raide et expo hein, mais facile.

Last step, no problem though still steep and exposed.

Chute interdite. A la descente faut pas se louper...

Well, almost. One last step and it's not so easy. There's a chain but it still a 3+ or maybe 4 move. And you really shouldn't fall. Going down, you better watch out...

On the background, Silberhorn (3695 m) and further away Jungfrau (4158 m).

Let's take the tour, it's not bad over there. Looking south, Lauterbrunnental below and the ridge between Jungfrau & Breithorn above. That nice snowy peak is Äbeniflue (3962 m), a Spring touring ski classic.

West: that's Sefinental going up to Sefinafurge, a pass linking with Kiental. It's nice over there, Alice and I did it both ways 5 years ago. Mountains, well that's mostly Gspaltenhorn and Schilthorn.

We see the Löbhorner, these tiny fingers.

North: Lauterbrunnen and Wengen. And countless summits I climbed :-). Feels like home.

Bit more to the east: Kleine Scheidegg. Some beautiful hikes too over there...

East, cherry on the pie: Eiger and Mönch.

Panoramas ouest & est

C'est reparti ! Direction la cabane.

Moving now, back to the hut.

Facing a long downhill. I will struggle, close to body failure at the end. Body was still on holidays I guess.

Great scenaries but you need to watch your feet, it's still technical and exposed until 2000 m.

I'm safe now, said hi to the sheep and kept on going.

Feels like it will never end or I'm not moving. In the end, it took me more time to go down than up :s.

So I welcomed the valley floor. Heading to a bar now, I need something fresh !!

Perfect landscapes. It's mythological Switzerland there, problably the place I like the most in the Swiss Alps. If only they could get rid of these tourists helicopters... Technical and challenging hike where you often need to focus. You better be physically ready otherwise the downhill will be painful! It made me want (again) to climb Jungfrau from Rottalgrat :-)
