Petersgrat

Petersgrat, my last conquest, is a large snowy ridge between the Kanderfirn glacier and the Lötschental valley, between cantons Berne and Valais. Dante and I traversed it from Gasteretal. Awesome but very long day...

From Kandersteg, bus/taxi to Selden (you need to book it). Then up to Kanderfirn and Petersgrat (3202 m), followed by downhill to Lauchernalp. Overall 1950 meters ascent, 1300 descent and 20 km. That took us around 9 hours, pushing it. No technical difficulties, just stay away from the crevasses area.

The bus dropped us in Selden. That valley, the Gasteretal, is one of my favorite in Switzerland. Isolated, U-shaped, wild. I walked through it in 2012 on my way up to Lötschpass and loved it.

Heading to Kanderfirn, just above over there.

Après un peu de montée, derrière nous. Le Balmhorn, 3698 m.

After a little bit of climbing, behind us that's Balmhorn (3698 m).

Sur notre gauche, le Doldenhorn, 3638 m.

To our left, that's Doldenhorn, 3638 m.

A l'attaque !

Le chemin rejoint une jolie petite moraine.

The path goes on a pretty and tiny moraine.

Yeah so very cool hike, with green and flowers. But let's get serious now. After 900 meters up, here we are at the Kanderfirn, which flows at the foothills of the Blümlisalp range.

Ice cube gear is out, let's go.

At first, it's a gentle dry glacier, not so many crevasses and you see them.

Going around the seracs. Snow is now covering the ice, it's more difficult for walking and treacherous.

Just down there that's Mutthorn, sitting between Kanderfirn (Gasteretal) on the left and Tschingelfirn (Lauterbrunnental) on the right. Behind, that's Gspalthenhorn. Between Blümlisalp (the very left) and that one, that's the tiny Gamchilücke pass, leading to the Kiental.

From the flat part up to Petergrat, there's 400 meters ascent on snow, which felt like 4000. We are boiling and getting tired.

So we are pretty happy to make it to the ridge. The Valais welcomes us. Bietshhorn (3930 m) to the left and all the stars on the background: Weissmies, Monte Rosa, Weisshorn, Dent Blanche etc.

Zoom over Weisshorn and Bishorn. You can guess Barrhorn and the Turmangletscher. A piece also from our beautiful Zinalrothorn and from Matterhorn. To the very left, the Kleine Matterhorn.

A bit further left, Breithorn, Castor & Pollux and Lyskam.

Au nord, les Blümlisalp.

Looking north, the Blümlisalp range.

Tschingelhorn, Breithorn, Nicolas, Aletschhorn.

Ok nice but technically we are only half way. And there are still of few ups mixed with the downs :-).

Again that feeling of standing still :s. We followed the neves, south of the ridge. And up and down and up... Even Dante stopped occasionally to breath. His first time I presume.

Le Lötschental se rapproche.

Lötschental is getting closer.

Ok, sparing you the details, getting closer to Lauchernalp. We came from up there, where the neves are. Damn, I was fed up with the snow!

And that's Lauchernalp. Original plan was to take the cable car down to the valley, then a bus/train back to Kandersteg and drive to Basel. We missed that last cable car, some route mistakes and too much ambition :-). I wasn't really keen to hike the remaining 700 meters down and come back home super late. Instead I find a nice little berghaus! Nice evening, my first in beautiful Lötschental.

J'ai réussi ! Il est enfin fatigué !

I made it! He's finally exhausted!

C'était juste beaucoup trop long. Probablement à faire à ski...

I was dreaming of that Petersgrat for years. I wasn't disapointed, it's gorgeous. Two amazing valleys and exceptional views over Oberland and Valais. It was just too long. Probably more a ski tour...
