Pollux

Yesterday, after climbing the Breithorn, we slept at the Ayas guides hut in Italy. This morning, we'll try the Pollux (4092 meters) and then will go back to the Klein Matterhorn to take a gondola down to Zermatt in Switzerland. Report of a great day.

Route

Start from the italian hut, climb up to Pollux, traverse the glacier towards Klein Matterhorn.

Magical sunrise over the italian Alps.

I've no idea what I'm looking at but it's beautiful.

It's not always easy to make these early starts high in the mountain but you somehow find the motivation. I will climb this today ! We'll need one hour to reach the bottom of the rocky ridge of Pollux.

Here we are, taking a closer look. We put away crampons and poles. Sébastien shortens the rope between us. Now let's climb this !

Pas bien méchant au début. Parfait pour nous autres débutants.

Not too difficult at first. Perfect for rookies like us.

Pretty easy to take nice pics over there.

Came some tougher parts but the fixed ropes are helpful.

A short chimney before we reach the snowy ridge.

Quick break before we do the final ridge. Loving it... Thin air and adrenalin is an interesting mix.

Great views looking north-west. The peaks of Breithorn (we did the most distant one the day before). To its right: Obergabelhorn, Zinalrothorn and Weisshorn. To the left: Dent d'Hérens and further more the Mont Blanc. Only missing the Matterhorn, behind Breithorn.

The summit. Ok it's not a huge achievement but we are pretty happy anyway ! Great atmosphere.

My watch delays a bit, it's 4092 o'meters in fact.

To the south, nice views too. Actually it's my current wallpaper at work !

Ça a l'air bien raide...

How can you talk about Pollux and not its twin ? Here's Castor. A few rope parties are working on it. It looks pretty steep...

Sad but true you gotta go down. Here we are again on the glacier, traversing back to Klein Matterhorn.

Dernier coup d’œil sur notre Pollux. On voit encore des cordées au travail.

Last peep over our Pollux. Still some people on it.

And back at the Klein Matterhorn. From there, unrestricted view on the next objective : the Zinalrothorn (4221 meters). One of the most elegant swiss mountains if you ask me. After a resting night in Zermatt, tomorrow we go up to the Rothornhütte (3198 m) to try the summit the day after. If you have good eyes you can spot the hut, at the foot of the central rocky spur.

Another day to remember. Our guide's advise help us to improve. The Zinalrothorn plays in the upper league and will test us. The addiction to adrenalin gets strong. Tomorrow, we go up to the Rothornhütte.
