Aux sources du Rhin

Introduction

 
Cette rando m'emmène d'Andermatt aux sources du Rhin antérieur, entre les cantons d'Uri et des Grisons. Après un passage aérien sur le Pazolastock, la ballade se termine au col de l'Oberalp, frontière entre les 2 cantons. Le retour à Andermatt se fait par train depuis le col ou à pied depuis le sommet (rajouter 2 bonnes heures). J'ai snowboardé et véloté là bas, ne reste qu'à randonner !

This hike takes me from Andermatt to the source of the Vorderrhein (Anterior Rhine), between cantons Uri and Grisons. After a high ridge on the Pazolastock, the stroll ends at the Oberalppass, the cantonal border. I went back to Andermatt with the train but you can walk down there, just add 2 hours. I snowboarded and cycled there, now I need to hike !

Route

Depuis Andermatt, suivre le Lolenpass puis l'Oberalppass. Le Lai di Toma (nom Romanche du Tomasee) est alors indiqué.

From Andermatt, follow Lolenpass and then Oberalppass. The Lai di Toma (Romansch name for Tomasee) is then properly indicated.

Une belle journée s'annonce. Coup d’œil sur les premiers lacets de l'Oberalppass au dessus d'Andermatt. Je reviendrais de par là.

A peine sorti d'Andermatt, la vallée d'Unteralp s'ouvre déjà. Le Lolenpass est caché entre les 2 montagnes au centre.

Just left Andermatt and the Unteralp valley is already there. The Lolenpass is between these 2 mountains, in the middle.

Assez tranquille cette vallée, pas croisé grand monde. Au delà on tombe sur la Leventina, principale vallée du Tessin. Mon col se trouve sur la gauche.

Really quiet this valley, I've seen no one. Further away is the Leventina, the main valley in Ticino. My pass for today is on the left side though.

La montée au col se présente. On devine les épingles.

Nous voici au Lopenpass, Pass Tagliola en Romanche. A part des chèvres, c'est très calme...

Made it to this Lolenpass, Pass Tagliola in Romansch. Apart from a few goats, it's really quiet.

Après le col, vers le nord on tombe sur la chaîne qui sépare les Grisons d'Uri (Oberalpstock, Düssi, Tödi etc). Derrière, c'est la superbe Maderanertal.

After the pass, to the nort is the mountain range between Grisons and Uri (Oberalpstock, Düssi, Tödi etc). Behind this is the magnificient Maderanertal.

Je l'ai reveillé en pleine sieste la pauvre.

J'arrive enfin au Tomasee, source officielle du Rhin (Rheinquelle en allemand). En tout cas de sa branche antérieure. A voir tout les cours d'eau et glaciers autour, la conclusion surprend mais finalement c'est le symbole qui compte...

And that's the Tomasee, official source of the river Rhine (Rheinquelle in German). At least of its anterior branch. Looking at all the glaciers and streams around, I found it strange but it's all about the symbol after all...

Le symbole ne manque pas de charme en tout cas...

J'ai poursuivi ma route direction le Pazolastock (2740 m), après un stop à la Baduhütte. De là une jolie crête un peu aérienne.

I then climbed the Pazolastock (2740 m) after a stop at the Baduhütte. From there a nice ridge, sometimes a little bit technical.

La descente commence, direction le col de l'Oberalp à l'est, qu'on voit juste en bas. A droite dans la vallée on voit la ville de Disentis (Mustér en Romanche).

The downhill starts, heading to the Oberalppass to the east, which we can see down there. To the right, further away in the valley is Disentis (Mustér in Romansch).

Vers l'ouest, la vallée d'Andermatt. Elle se termine par le magnifique col de la Furka. Sur la gauche du village d'Hospental débute la vallée qui mène au mythique col du Saint-Gothard.

To the west is Andermatt's valley. It ends with the beautiful Furkapass. To the left after the village of Hospental starts the valley which goes up to the mythic Gotthard pass.

La descente est terminée, on arrive au col de l'Oberalp. Un phare symbolise la source du Rhin...

Downhill's over, made it to the Oberalp pass. A lighthouse symbolyses the source of the river Rhine.

Conclusion

Pas de glaciers gigantesques ni de 4000 mètres ici mais de belles vallées sauvages et peu touristiques, hormis Andermatt bien sur, véritable carrefour alpin entre Saint-Gothard, Oberalp et Furka. Le Tessin et les Grisons sont à deux pas. Les randonnées sont innombrables, justement du fait de l'absence de glaciers et 4000m. L'exploration ne fait que commencer !

Don't expect massive glacier or 4000 m peaks there but nice wild quiet valleys, apart from Andermatt itfelf of course, true alpine crossroad between Gotthard, Oberalp and Furka pass. Ticino and Grisons are close neighbors. Countless hikes too, probably because there's no glaciers and 4000m. The exploration starts !
