Schreckhornhuette

La Schreckhornhütte c'est un refuge de montagne au pied du Shreckhorn (4078 m). Elle est était sur mon ecran radar depuis quelque temps car l'itinéraire, parfois technique, passe dans une vallée reculée peuplée de glaciers et de 4000 mètres. L'aller retour depuis Grindelwald demande environ 8 heures. Avec Dante, on s'est lancé mi juillet et franchement le décor est à la hauteur de l'effort...

The Schreckhornhütte is a mountain hut at the bottom of the Schreckhorn (4078 m). It's been on my radar for a while because the sometimes technical trail goes in a isolated valley full with glaciers and 4000 meters peaks... Back and forth from Grindelwald requires 8 hours of effort. With Dante, we took the challenge and honestly the reward matched the effort...

Départ de Grindelwald depuis le parking du téléphérique montant à Pfinstegg. La cabane est indiquée dès le début avec Pfinstegg et Bäregg. La moitié du tracé est classée randonnée alpine (balisage bleu). A eviter si vous avez le vertige ou s'il pleut...

We start from Grindelwald, at the parking place near the Gondola that goes up to Pfinstegg. The trail to the hut is already there. Half of this trail is classified as Alpine hike (blue markers). Avoid when raining or with fear of heights...

On gare la voiture et on devine déjà la vallée, coincée entre le Schreckhorn (à gauche) et l'Eiger (à droite).

We park the car and see already the valley we are heading to, between the Schreckhorn (to the left) and the Eiger (to the right).

On laisse le téléphérique Pfinstegg de coté et on monte tout à pied ! Grindelwald apparait rapidement entre les sapins.

We ignored the Pfinstegg cable-car and walked all the way up. Grindelwald quickly appears through the pines.

Après une grosse heure, la vallée commence à s'ouvrir. Le Grosses Fiescherhorn, 4048 m, apparait sur la gauche.

After one hour, the valley gets wider and the Grosser Fiescherhorn (4048 m) appears to the left.

Derrière le canyon laissé par le glacier, l'Unter Grindelwaldglestscher, est impressionnant. Son recul l'est tout autant. 150 ans auparavant il arrivait à l'altitude où je me trouve. Les photos d'époque le prouve avec éloquence...

Behind, the canyon left by the glacier, the Unter Grindelwaldgletscher, is impressive. And so is its recession... 150 years ago this glacier was as high as where I shot this picture. Just take a look at the photographs from that time...

On arrive rapidement au restaurant Bäregg. L'itineraire alpin (bleu) démarre après. Cette zone est d'ailleurs en train de s'écrouler peu à peu, le glacier ne retenant plus les terres.

We made it to restaurant Bäregg. The blue trail starts from there. This place is by the way slowly sliding as the glacier doesn't hold anymore the earth.

Depuis Bäregg, la vue est déjà très belle.

From Bäregg, the view is already beautiful. 

On continue vers la Schreckhornhütte, laissant Bäregg derrière nous. Le sentier reste facile, il faut juste slalommer entre les moutons :-). On voit bien le glissement de terrain d'il y a quelques années qui détruisit l'ancienne cabane. Le nouveau tracé passe autour de l'éboulement.

We keep heading to the Schreckhornhütte, leaving Bäregg behind. The trail is still easy, you just have to slalom between the sheep :-). Few years ago a mudslide destroyed the old restaurant. The new trail goes around it.

Nous passons un coude et le Schreckhorn apparait avec quelques nuages au sommet. La cabane est coincée entre les 2 glaciers: l'Ischmeer en bas et le Shreckfirn au dessus. Le chemin passe sur la gauche de l'Ischmeer.

We pass a corner and the Schreckhorn appears with some clouds at the top. The hut is somewhere between the 2 glaciers Ischmeer (bottom) and Schreckfirn (top). The trail goes along the left side of Ischmeer.

Arrivent les chaînes/echelles et la partie technique du sentier. Au fond c'est l'Eiger avec une inhabituelle face sud.

We reach now the technical part of the trail with chains and ladders. On the background is the Eiger and a quite unusual south face.

Quelques passages amusants... En montée ça va, à la descente un peu moins.

Evidemment à éviter par jour de pluie...

Obviously, avoid when raining...

On finit par arriver à la partie supérieure de l'ischmeer. C'est grandiose.

We made it to the upper part of the Ischmeer. It's amazing.

Le temps aurait pu être meilleur. Cela dit les nuages se sont poliment écartés 10 minutes le temps que je prenne la belle crête du Kleines Fiescherhorn (à droite) au Finsteraarhorn (tout à gauche). Ce dernier, plus haut sommet de l'Oberland bernois, culmine à 4273 m.

Weather could have been better. However, the clouds had the decency to spread apart long enough for me to take a picture of the beautiful ridge from Kleines Fieascherhorn (right) to Finsteraarhorn (left). That one is the highest peak of the Bernese Oberland, 4273 m.

Enfin la cabane, la fameuse Schreckhornhütte à 2530 mètres. Le très beau Schreckhorn (4078) et le Lauteraarhorn sont hélas dans les nuages...

De la cabane, la vue est incroyable, de l'Eiger à droite au Finsteraarhorn vers la gauche.

From the hut, the view is amazing, from Eiger at the right hand side to the Finsteraarhorn towards left.

Quelques zooms. L'Eiger et sa face sud. On voit bien la crête Mitellegi sur sa gauche, voie normale pour l'Eiger. La cabane du même nom est sur la partie plane de cette crête.

A few zooms. The Eiger and its south face. To its left is the Mitellegi ridge, classic route to climb the Eiger. The Mitellegihütte is somewhere on the flat part of this ridge.

Conclusion

Vous aimez les glaciers et un peu de verticalité  ? Ca peut vous plaire... La partie technique dure 20/30 minutes et demande un minimum de prudence, particulièrement à la descente quand on est déjà fatigué par les 5 heures de rando. Vous pouvez gagner 45 min et 400m de montée en prenant d'ailleurs le téléphérique Pfinstegg. On l'a pris au moins au retour... Randonnée 5 étoiles en tout cas avec un décor à couper le souffle.

You like glaciers and enjoy verticality ? You might like this... The technical part lasts 20/30 minutes and requires caution, especially on the way back down, after 5 hours walking. You can spare 45 min and 400 meters ascent taking the Pfinstegg gondola. We at least took it on the way back... 5 stars hike with really stunning views !
