Aletschgletscher

 En 2009 et en 2011, j'ai randonné du coté du glacier d'Aletsch, dans le canton du Valais. Parmi les innombrables chemins, j'avais choisi le spectaculaire tracé entre Eggishorn, Bettmerhorn, Märjelesee et Fiescheralp. Randonnée technique mais magnifique. C'est une incontournable en Suisse à mon avis.

In 2009 and 2011, I hiked by the Aletsch glacier, in canton Valais. Many trails over there, I chose a spectacular one between Eggishorn, Bettmerhorn, Märjelesee and Fiescheralp. Quite a technical hike but absolutely beautiful. IMHO, it's a must-do in Switzerland.

Depuis l'alpe de Fiescheralp, téléphérique vers la station Eggishorn. Rapide détour vers l'Eggishorn, puis demi-tour direction le Bettmerhorn. On laisse le restaurant Station Bettmerhorn, puis on longe le glacier direction nord vers le Märjelesee. Finalement retour vers Fiescheralp en passant par le tunnel.

From Fiescheralp, take the gongola up to Eggishorn station. Quick detour up and down the Eggishorn, then follow the blue trail towards Bettmerhorn. From there leave the restaurant Station Bettmerhorn, go north along the glacier towards Märjelesee. Finally, back to Fiescheralp through the tunnel.

Au sommet de l'Eggishorn. N'était pas spécialement rassuré mais faut bien frimer un peu. En bas, l'Aletschgletscher donc. Au fond, Jungfrau, Mönch et Eiger, face sud.

De l'autre coté, au sud-ouest, la station du téléphérique, puis la crête qui va vers le Bettmerhorn, le sujet de la journée.  Au fond, une bonne partie des Alpes valaisannes: Dom, Weisshorn...

... et bien sûr le seul et unique, le Cervin.

Les passages délicats vont commencer.

Tricky bits about to start.

Le tracé est sécurisé et ça passe tranquille. Faut juste pas avoir le vertige ou qu'il pleuve.

The trail is safe and it goes ok, unless fear of heights or rain.

Le glacier n'est jamais loin et rends cette randonnée vraiment magique. Les moraines, ces traces noires sur le glacier, sont les cicatrices de réunions de petits glaciers en amont.

The glacier is never far and makes this hike truly magical. The moraines, those black tracks on the glacier, are scars left by the merges of smaller glaciers upstream.




Plusieurs glaciers se donnent en effet rendez-vous à la Konkordiaplatz pour former le glacier d'Aletsch, le plus grand des Alpes soit dit en passant (23 km, en 2014).

Several glaciers are indeed merging at Konkordiaplatz to form the Aletsch glacier, the biggest of the Alps by the way (23 km, in 2014).

Elle est pas belle ma crête ??

Coup d’œil derrière avec l'Eggishorn au centre et les Wannenhorns à gauche.

De l'autre coté le glacier continue sa descente vers la vallée du Rhône. Entre les deux, les impressionnantes gorges de la Massa.

The glacier flows towards the Rhône valley. In between, it will go through the impressive Massa gorges.




Nous voila à la croix du Bettmerhorn. Plus bas c'est Bettmeralp et son lac. Sur la gauche, la vallée de Conche qui remonte vers les col du Grimsel et Furka. De l'autre coté, Brig et la vallée du Rhône qui débute.

Made it to Bettmerhorn. Down there is Bettmeralp and its lake. On the left we see the Goms valley (you get to Furka & Grimsel passes if you follow it). On the other side, Brig and the Rhône valley.




Passés le restaurant au pied du Bettmerhorn, on descend vers le glacier, on longeant vers le nord.

We left the restaurant down the Bettmerhorn, going north and down to the glacier.

Pas évident de réaliser les distances. Voyez vous les randonneurs sur le glacier ? C'est immense en fait !

It's not easy to estimate distances. Look at the hikers on the glacier. It's huge in fact !

On arrive au Märjelesee, une petite retenue d'eau de fonte qui apparaît et disparaît au gré des mouvements du glacier. En 2009, le lac était bien là. Certaines années il est beaucoup gros.

Arrived at Märjelesee, a small melted water reservoir which appears and disappears as the glacier moves. In 2009, the lake was there. Some years it's much bigger.



Mais en 2011, plus de lac. On pouvait descendre toucher le glacier ! Pour vous rendre des proportions, cherchez Alice à droite de la photo.

But in 2011, no lake anymore. We got to touch the glacier ! To have a sense of proportions just spot Alice on the right side of the picture.




Lac ou pas, c'est paradisiaque...

Lake or not, it's a paradise...

On s'engage à présent dans le tunnel qui permet de rejoindre Fiescheralp sans se retaper la montée vers l'Eggishorn.

Now, we need to go through the tunnel to go back to Fiescheralp. Nice short-cut to avoid climbing again to Eggishorn !

Quel paradis ! Par beau temps c'est génial. L'idéal c'est sur deux jours en combiner une promenade dans la forêt de Riederalp (article à venir).

What a paradise ! With a nice weather, it's awesome. Best is a 2 days hike to include a stroll in Riederalp forest (I'll write something soon).
