Balmflue Südgrat

Au programme de cette incroyable journée d'automne, dimanche dernier, la Balmflue Südgrat dans le Jura soleurois. Jerry et moi sommes venus à bout des 16 longueurs de cette interminable grande voie, la plus longue du Jura.

On the agenda of this amazing autumn Sunday, the Balmflue Südgrat in Solothurn Jura. Jerry and I climbed the 16 pitches of this never ending rock climb, the longest in the Jura range.

Route

Depuis les Ruines de Balm. Suivez les topo... C'est assez facile de confondre Balmflue Südgrat avec la Südwände, une autre grande voie. C'est ce qui nous étais arrivé l'an dernier avec Dante :-). Au départ de la Südwände, de la peinture 'SG' vous dirige vers la Südgrat...

From Balm Ruines. Follow topos... It's quite easy to confuse Balmflue Südgrat with Südwände, another climb. That's what happened to Dante and I last year :-). At the start of Südwände, search the paint 'SG' and follow the path.

Topo

5c (5bA0 obligatoire). Rocher calcaire, bien équipée, relativement bien flechée. Une corde de 50 mètres suffit, une dizaine de dégaines, quelques longes, un friend pour se rassurer sur certains passages un peu aéré. Ca prends entre 7 et 9 heures normalement.

5c (5bA0 obligatory). Limestone, nice equipment and signposting. You need a 50 meters rope, 10 quickdraws, a few slings, one friend for your peace of mind in some sections where bolts are too distant. It takes 7 to 9 hours.

Difficile de representer 7 heures d'escalade en quelques photos mais essayons quand même. Ici, ambiance typique du Jura avec son beau calcaire et ses pins maritimes.

Not easy to show what these 7 hours of rock climbing were but I will try. Here, a typical scenery in Jura, with the beautiful limestone and the pine trees.

Moyennement aimé le passage cablé (A0). Pas sûr qu'il s'évite si facilement par contre.

I did not enjoy that much the part with the cable (A0). Not sure you can avoid it easily though.

Pas mal de passages sympas en 3 et 4. Escalade plaisir.

Many grade 3 and 4 pitches. Fun climb.

La 8ème longueur, la plus dure, en 5c. Traversée puis dalle qui passent très bien.

The 8th pitch, the toughest, is 5c. Traverse then slab which were pretty cool.

Derrière c'est l'ambiance des grands jours. Le plateau suisse et les Alpes. Il fait 20°C mi novembre, c'est incroyable... On en profite.

Behind, well that's awesome too. Swiss plateau and the Alps. It's 20°C mid november, it's incredible. Enjoying it !

On aperçoit les derniers bastions. La crête n'est plus qu'à quelques longueurs.

Superbe 5b+.

On a croisé une cordée espagnole très sympa. Les voila au bas du 5c (5b selon les topo), antépénultième longueur .

We crossed a friendly Spanish team. Here they are, at the bottom of the 5c (5b depending on topos), second to last pitch.

Ils nous prennent en photo depuis le 'saut du chat'. Merci !

Jerry m'assure, je vais faire la dernière longueur. Pas mécontent d'en terminer d'ailleurs, c'est superbe mais long et l'heure tourne.

Jerry will belay me in the last pitch. Quite happy to finish, it was great but so long and clock is ticking.

Still so beautiful, can't get enough. The wide angle pictures doesn't show you how impressive that is.

On trouve relativement facilement la sortie, par les bois.

On arrive à la voiture, le soleil vient de se coucher.

L'une de mes plus belles journée d'escalade. Superbe grande voie d'escalade plaisir. Météo exceptionnelle et superbe entente avec Jerry. Merci de m'avoir accompagné ! On a été super efficaces :-)
