C'est une randonnée archi-classique à faire en famille, quasi aucun denivelé ni difficulté technique. Compter 4 heures (hors Jungfraujoch, voir plus bas). Evitez les beaux dimanches d'été ou alors révisez votre japonais !Départ et arrivée s'effectuent à Wengen (vallée de Lauterbrunnen, canton de Berne). Un train à crémaillière relie Lauterbrunnen et Wengen.

A Wengen, promenez-vous ! Le village est magnifique et (presque) sans voitures. Difficule de faire plus suisse. Poussez jusqu'à l'église, la vue sur la vallée de Lauterbrunnen y est parfaite.
Enjoy Wengen ! It's a lovely typically Swiss village. Cars are (almost) forbidden. Walk to the church, the view on the Lauterbrunnen valley is perfect over there.
La vue sur la vallée vaut des points. C'est à mon avis la plus belle de Suisse, avec une forme en U parfaite. En bas on voit Lauterbrunnen et sur l'autre versant de la vallée on distingue la ville de Mürren et le Schilthorn au dessus. Et derrière un long enchainement de faces nord (Abneflue, Breithorn, Blümlisalp etc).
Une fois repu(e) de Wengen, dirigez vous vers le téléphérique qui monte à la station Männlichen. Une fois là haut, prenez à gauche vers le Männlichen lui même (chemin Unesco). C'est une montée optionnelle de 100 mètres qui prends 20 minutes et offre un point de vue incomparable.
Au nord, on voit la Schynige Platte (une autre randonnée somptueuse), plus loin derrière le lac de Thoune et sur la gauche le Niesen (lien interne).
Done with Wengen ? Ok, head to the Gondola which goes up to the Männlichen station. Once there, take left towards the Männlichen itself (Unesco path). It's a small optional climb (100 meters, 20 min) but offers the best possible view.
Looking north is the Schynige Platte (another great hike) and further is the Lake Thun. On its left lies the Niesen (internal link).
En regardant vers l'est et en zoomant bien, on tombe sur le Titlis, l'un des sommets principaux de Suisse centrale, au dessus de la station d'Engelberg.
Now look est with your eagles eyes. You see the Titlis (don't laugh), a major peak in central Switzerland, over Engelberg.
Vers le sud, le fameux trio de faces nord : Eiger, Mönch et Jungfrau. En gros, la randonnée va consister à contourner par la gauche les 2 petites montagnes au premier plan (Tschuggen et Lauberhorn, juste derrière la station de Männlichen).
Finally to the south lies the famous almighty north faces of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfau. Basically, the hike goes around the 2 tiny mountains on the foreground (Tschuggen and Lauberhorn, just behind the Männlichen station).
En zoomant sous la Jungfrau, on trouve le Silberhorn. Parfaite pyramide de neige qui inspira entre autres J.R.R Tolkien.
If you look closer, below the Jungfrau, you see the Silberhorn. Perfect pyramid of snow which inspired many, including J.R.R Tolkien.
Demi-tour vers le Panoramaweg, qui relie Männlichen à Kleine Scheidegg (col entre Eiger et Lauberhorn). Ca prends 1h30.
Le chemin porte bien son nom, la vue est ... panoramique. Dans la vallée, c'est Grindelwald, l'épicentre de l'Oberland, l'un des haut-lieux de l'alpinisme depuis le XIXèm siècle avec Zermatt et Chamonix. Le Wetterhorn (au fond), le Schreckhorn et l'ombre inquiétante de l'Eiger surplombent le village sur sa droite.
Ok, let's start the actual hike on the Panoramaweg, which goes from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg (the pass between Eiger and the Lauberhorn). It takes 1.30h.
The path disserves its name, the view is... panoramic. In the valley, that's Grindelwald, a major place in the Oberland, one of these places in Europe with Chamonix and Zermatt where mountaineering kicked off. On the right, from background to foreground are the Wetterhorn, the Schrekchorn and the shadow of the Eiger.
On arrive vite à Kleine Scheidegg. Très touristique, on y trouve hotel, bars et restaurants. Et une station de train ramenant vers Grindelwald ou Wengen. L'Eigerglestcher (le glacier de l'Eiger) reste impressionnant malgré sa fonte.
It's a quick walk to Kleine Scheidegg. Full of tourists, you'll find hotel, bars and restaurants. And also a train station to go back to Grindelwald or Wengen. The Eiger glacier remains impressive despite its retreat.
A Kleine Scheidegg, le must c'est la montée au Jungfraujoch, le col entre Mönch et Jungfrau. Le train à crémaillière le plus haut d'Europe traverse littéralement Eiger et vous dépose à 3500 mètres. Le clou du spectacle c'est la vue sur le glacier d'Aletsch. C'est pas donné mais ça vaut le coup... La montée prend facile 45 minutes, avec 2 arrêts pour admirer la vue.
Ci-dessous la vue du Sphynx, le python rocheux où est installée la gare d'arrivée du train pour le Jungfraujoch. Kleine Scheidegg est de l'autre coté, et donc à gauche c'est le début de la Jungfrau. On peut donc sortir et marcher un peu autour du Sphynx. J'ai même croisé des japonais en tongs...
From Kleine Scheidegg, the climb to the Jungfraujoch (the pass between Mönch and Jungfrau) is a must-do. The highest cog train in Europe will take you litteraly through the Eiger and leave you at 3500m. The highlight is the view on the Aletsch glacier. It's not cheap but totally worth it. The climb takes around 45 minutes with 2 stops to enjoy the view.
Below is the Sphynx, the roc where the train station is. Kleine Scheidegg is behind and the Jungfrau starts on the left. So yeah, you can go out a bit and walk. I even crossed Japanese people in flip-flops...
On est venus pour ça: le glacier d'Aletsch, plus grand des Alpes avec environ 23 km de long (en 2011). Notez les belles moraines (les traces noires longitudinales), signe de la réunion en amont de branches du glacier. Le fleuve de glace devient fleuve tout court en se jetant dans le jeune Rhone. Au fond, c'est les Alpes valaisannes et l'Italie juste derrière.
Okay, we came here to watch this: the almighty Aletsch glacier, the longest in the Alps with its 23 km (in 2011). Look at the nice moraines (the dark tracks), an evidence of a merge between upstream glacier branchs. The river of ice eventually turns into the river Rhone. On the background are the Valaisian Alps and behind Italy.
De l'autre coté, au nord, à nos pieds c'est Kleine Scheidegg et, derrière le Lauberhorn, la vallée de Lauterbrunnen. Tout au fond, après le plateau Suisse, on distingue la crête du Jura. Par beau temps, à l'oeil nu on voit même les Vosges et la Forêt-Noire. Un défi ? Saurez-vous trouver le Niesen :-) ?
On the other side, looking north,we see Kleine Scheidegg below. Behind the Lauberhorn is the Lauterbrunnen valley. Further behind, the Swiss plateau, and finally on the background is the ridge of the Jura Mountains. With a clearer sky we could even see the Vosges Mountains and the Black-forest. You think you're good ? Can you spot the Niesen :-) ?
De retour sur le plancher des vaches (train à crémaillière retournant à Kleine Scheidegg), on entame la descente vers Wengen. En face on distingue le village de Mürren, une autre merveille suisse.
Back to Kleine Scheidegg, we start the downhill to Wengen. Ahead is the village of Mürren, another swiss wonder.
Un coup de zoom pour admirer le fameux Schilthorn au fond (au premier plan c'est seulement la station intermédiaire de Birg). C'est (presque) un 3000 mètres qui a eu son heure de gloire dans les années 60 pour avoir abrité un tournage de James Bond. Ca reste une fantastique et très longue randonnée.
Let's look closer and admire the well known Schilthorn on the background (on the foreground is just the middle Gondola station, Birg). It's (almost) a 3000 meters who got famous in the sixties because a James Bond movie was shot there. It is still a long and great hike.
On continue de descendre, profitant du temps superbe et des couleurs ephémères de l'automne.

On a enfin contourné le Lauberhorn, et on voit à nouveau Wengen.

Après une descente qui parait interminable nous voilà de retour à Wengen. Un dernier coup d'oeil derrière nous sur la Jungfrau et le Silberhorn.
After a long downhill, we're back in Wengen. One last peep behind us on the Jungfrau and the Silberhorn.
Conclusion
Une classique ne devient pas une classique par hasard... La vue est magnifique et les possibilités nombreuses avec les sentiers, les restaurants et les remontées mécaniques. Grindelwald et Wengen c'est tout simplement le paradis.
This classic hike became classic for a reason... The view is stunning and the many paths, restaurants and cable-cars offer great possibilities. Grindelwad and Wengen, that's just paradise...
