Finsteraarhorn

En juillet, Dante et moi avons fait un mini-raid de 3 jours en Valais. Trois jours magnifiques entre glaciers et sommets majusteux, à l'écart de tout. Le but était de grimper le Finsteraarhon, le toit de l'Oberland bernois.

In July, Dante and I did a 3 days mini-raid between in Valais. Three beautiful days between glaciers and majestic peaks, away from civilization. Goal was to climb Finsteraarhorn, top of Bernese Oberland.

Les 3 jours / The 3 days:

1. Jungfraujoch > Konkordiaplatz > Finsteraarhornhütte
2. Finsteraarhorn (4274 m)
3. Finsteraarhornhütte > Oberaarsee > Grimselpass

 

 Jour/Day 2 - Route

Coté PD+ ou AD-. Cheminement fut très simple, avec des cairns au début et une belle trace dans la neige. Belle montée bien efficace sur neige puis arête assez simple mais exposée et pas assez sèche à notre goût...

Rated PD+ or AD-. Way up was very easy to find, with cairns at first and then a snowy track. Efficient way up on snow, then not too tough but exposed ridge, which was not dry enough for us.

Départ du refuge avant l'aube. On avale rapidement les premieres centaines de mètres de dénivelé. Le ciel commence à reprendre des couleurs.

We left the hut before dawn and went up quickly on the first hundreds meters ascent. Colors are slowly back in the sky.

On prends pied sur le glacier. Au dessus, quelques cordée. Quelques jolies crevasses là haut et des ponts de neige qui semblent vivre leur derniers instants... Quelques semaines plus tard, ça doit être rock and roll ici :-).

Stepping now on the glacier, other climbers above us. Some nice crevasses over there, with snow bridges that looked pretty thin... A few more weeks and this must be exciting here :-).

On passe le Frütstuckplatz, la 'place du petit déjeuner', un épéron rocheur entre 2 glaciers où peut souffler en sécurité. La trace passe entre les crevasses et le sérac puis monte droit au Hugisattel (4090 m), cet épaulement juste avant le début de l'arête nord.

We passed the Frütstuckplatz, the 'break-fast place', a rocky spur between two glaciers where you can safely rest. The track goes between the crevasses and the sérac, then straight up to Hugisattel  (4090 m), that saddle where the rocky north ridge starts.

Derrière, à l'ouest, Grünhorn et Fiescherhorns s'enflamment.

Idem au sud ouest avec les Wannenhorns.

On en termine avec la montée au Hugisattel. De l'autre coté, à l'est, vue exceptionelle. Le Finsteraargletscher juste en dessous. Le Schreckhorn tout à gauche. La Suisse centrale au fond.

We are done with the climb up to Hugisattel. On the other side, the view is exceptional. Down below is the Finsteraargletscher. Schreckhorn on the left side. Central Switzerland on the background.

Au nord ouest, vision surprenante: la face sud de l'Eiger (3970 m) et son arête Mittellegi. Arête que je grimperais pile deux semaines après :-).

A surprising vision to the north west: the south face of Eiger (3970 m) and its Mittellegi ridge. I will climb that ridge only two weeks after :-).

Au loin, au sud ouest cette fois, l'imposant Weisshorn entouré du Cervin et de la Dent Blanche. La classe.

Sud toujours mais un peu plus est, la région de Saas-Fee et son groupe des Mischabels (Allalinhorn, Alphubel, Täschhorn et Dom notamment).

South still but bit more east, the Saas-Fee area and the Mischabel group (including Allalinhorn, Alphubel, Täschhorn and Dom).

On attaque l'arête. Pas trop dure mais assez exposée.

Un peu plus haut, on est refroidit par une pente de neige bien exposée et offrant peu de protection. A la montée, je m'en serais sorti, à la descente je sais pas... D'un commun accord (ça mérite d'être souligné :-) ), on abandonne, une centaine de mètres avant le sommet. On serait surement arrivés là haut avec une arête sèche, snif.

Above, we got cold feet because of an exposed and difficult to protect snowy slope. On the way up, I would have managed but not sure for the way down... We quickly agreed, yes we sometimes do that ;-), to quit, one hundred meters before summit. I'm sure we could have made it on a dry ridge '-(.

On redescends, prudemment. A droite, mille mètres de vide :-).

Du coup, on en profite pour refaire quelques photos au Hugisattel. C'est tellement beau là haut... Gros plan sur l'Aletschhorn (4193 m) et le Lötschenlücke.

We took benefit of the extra time to make more pictures once back at Hugisattel. It's so nice up there. Now, zooming on the Aletschhorn (4193 m) and Lötschenlücke.

La descente est rapide, quoique les ponts de neige nous semblent encore plus fragile que tôt le matin. Comme on a tout le temps (il est environ 11 heures du matin là), on va se grimper vite fait le petit moignon en face, juste au dessus de la cabane.

Downhill went fast, although the snow bridges looked even thinner than early this morning. Since we had some time (it's around 11 am now), we did a quick climb on that rock down below, just above the hut.

On grimpe ce petit rocher. Jolie arête très facile et rigolote.

So we climbed that rock. Nice little rocky, very easy and fun.

Un peu déçu forcément de ne pas avoir fait le sommet, surtout que les chances que je le retente sont faibles. Cela dit, magnifique journée, la montagne nous en a mis plein les yeux et la météo fut radieuse. Et puis surtout on est resté raisonable. Du coup, pas trop de regrets, que des bons souvenirs.

Slightly disappointed of course to have missed the summit, especially since I will probably never go back again. But overall it was a gorgeous day, we saw many beauties and the weather was perfect. And more importantly, we were reasonable. So not so many regrets, only great memories.

In July, Dante and I did a 3 days mini-raid between in Valais.Three beautiful days between glaciers and majestic peaks, away from civilization. Goal was to climb Finsteraarhorn, we went close but failed.

1. Jungfraujoch > Konkordiaplatz > Finsteraarhornhütte
2. Finsteraarhorn 
3. Finsteraarhornhütte > Oberaarsee > Grimselpass

 

 Jour/Day 1 - Route

Alpinisme. Cotation F (facile), temps standard 6 heures.

Mountaineering. Rated F (easy), standard time 6 hours.

J'ai été dormir à Kleine Scheidegg la veille. De bon matin, j'attends Dante qui arrive de Bâle. On va monter au Jungfraujoch, ce col entre le Mönch et la Jungfrau. Vous voyez la gare d'arrivée ? Et oui, un funiculaire monte là haut :-). Bati il y a plus d'un siècle, il passe dans l'Eiger. Un truc de fou.

The day before I slept in Kleine Scheidegg. Early in the morning, I'm waiting for Dante who's coming from Basel. Then we will go up to Jungfraujoch, that pass between Mönch and Jungfrau. Can you see the railway station? Yes, a cog train goes up there :-). Built more than a hundred years ago, it goes inside the Eiger. Isn't that crazy ?

Une petite heure de train et nous voila au Jungfraujoch, à 3572 mètres, en Valais. On slalomme entre les touristes en tongs, on s'équipe et nous voila partis sur la trace, direction la Konkordiaplatz. Dès le début, l'ambiance est grandiose, avec vue imprenable sur la face sud de la Jungfrau (4158 m).

One hour after we left Kleine Scheidegg, we are at the Jungfraujoch, at 3572 m, in canton Valais. Slalomed around the tourists in flip flops, geared up and started walking down, heading to Konkordiaplatz. Immediately, the atmosphere is great with nice views over the south face of Jungfrau (4158 m).

Au début, très belle trace, très propre. Nous sommes en Suisse.

Et voila la Konkordiaplatz au loin. Ce gigantesque carrefour glaciaire est le lieu de naissance du glacier d'Alestch (le plus grand des Alpes), après la fusion de plusieurs gros glaciers. Les moraines, ces traces noires, des rochers en fait, sont les cicatrices de ces rencontres. Au dessus du coude du glacier, la petite pyramide c'est l'Eggishorn, magnifique randonnée là haut.

And that's Konkordiaplatz, in the distance. This huge glacier crossroad is the birth place of the Aletsch glacier, the longest in the Alps, after the merge of several big glaciers. The moraines, these black tracks (rocks in fact) are the scars left after the encounters. Above the bend of the glacier, the tiny pyramid is the Eggishorn, a beautiful hike over there.

Cette partie sur le Jungfraufirn, l'une des branches antérieures de l'Aletstchgletscher donc, est vraiment très facile, très peu de crevasses et qui s'enjambent facilement.

This part on the Jungfraufirn, one of the contributing branches of the Aletstchgletscher, is quite easy, only few crevasses and easy to step across.

On s'approche tout doucement de la Konkordiaplatz. On devine d'ailleurs déjà la Konkordiahütte. Au loin c'est le Fiescher Gabelhorn (3876 m). A gauche, l'impressionnant glacier Ewigschneefäld, qui descend des Fiescherhörner.

Me voila devant cet Ewigschneefäld. Avec Dante on se disait qu'on aimerait pas avoir à le traverser.

On passe une moraine. On quitte le Jungfraufirn pour le Ewigschneefäld.

L'approche de la Konkordiahütte fourmille de bédières, ces petites rivières sur glacier. Ce passage était déjà un peu plus compliqué. On est à 2700 mètres, il fait chaud et le glacier fond. On regarde où on met les pieds...

Around the Konkordiahütte, melting water is running everywhere. It's 2700 meters, it's hot and the glacier just melts. It makes it a bit more difficult to find your way around. Watch your steps :-).

Nous sommes sur la Konkordiaplatz. Des années que je voulais venir là ! La météo est magnifique, top journée. En face, à l'ouest, c'est le col du Lötschenlücke (3158 m), qui amène en Lötschental, cette superbe vallée du Valais. Le Grosser Aletschfirn, une autre branche de l'Aletschgletscher coule depuis le col. L'Aletschhorn (4193 m) à gauche.

Made it to the Konkordiaplatz. I've been dreaming of this for years! Weather is perfect, what a great day. Facing us, to the west, that's the Lötschenlücke pass (3158 m), with the beautiful Lötschental valley behind, in canton Valais. The Grosser Aletschfirn, another branch of the Aletschgletscher, flows from that pass. Aletschhorn (4193 m)  on the left.

Au nord ouest, Gletschhorn, Rottalhorn et Jungfrau. La voie normale de la Jungfrau passe par ce mur de neige inclinée. Ca doit être impressionnant...

North-west: Gletschhorn, Rottalhorn and Jungfrau. The normal route of Jungfrau goes on that steep snowy wall. Must be impressive...

Coup d'oeil à la Konkordiahütte et ses échelles bien raides. J'y serais bien monté mais la journée est encore longue...

On oblique plein est, sur le Grüneggfirn, en direction du col Grünhornlücke là haut. Environ 500 mètres de montée depuis la Konkordia.

Making a left turn, towards east, on the Grüneggfirn. We are heading to the Grünhornlücke pass up there. Around 500 meters ascent from Konkordia.

Il fait la montée finale au col. Je suis jaloux de ses poumons. Ce glacier n'a posé aucun problème.

He's doing the final push to the pass. Jealous of his lungs. This glacier was very easy overall.

Et nous voila au Grünhornlücke, 3279 m. Au fond, l'objectif du week-end, l'énorme Finsteraarhorn qui domine l'Oberland bernois du haut de ses 4274 mètres.

Au revoir la Konkordia.

Plus qu'une heure et nous serons au refuge, en face. Le glacier n'est pas trop crevassé au début mais il plus bas, méfiants, on contournera quelques ponts de neige. Il est tard et il fait chaud... Le Fieschergletscher coule vers la droite, vers Fiesch, dans la vallée de Conche. On apercoit également tout à droite un glacier qui descends, le Galmigletscher. C'est notre itinéraire de sortie dans deux jours!

One more hour for the hut, just ahead. The glacier is not too crevassy at first but further down we will make some detours to avoid some nasty snow bridges. It's late and warm and we are not so confident... The Fieschergletscher flows to the right side, towards Fiesch, in the Goms valley. To the very right, you also see a glacier coming down, that's the Galmigletscher. This is our exit way in two days from now.

Encore un petit effort pour arriver à la Finsteraarhornhütte, à 3048 m. Au moins, on a plus ces fichus crampons aux pieds :-).

Et là, c'est le miracle. On arrive au refuge et je tombe sur une légende de l'alpinisme, Ueli Steck en personne. L'un de mes héros. La Swiss Machine était en plein dans son projet de grimper les 82 sommets alpins de plus de 4000 mètres en 82 jours. Pour moi, c'est la cerise sur le gateau d'une journée parfaite.

Miracles do exist. We made it to the hut and bumped in a mountaineer legend, Ueli Steck himself. One of my heroes. The Swiss Machine was in the middle in his summer project: climb all the 82 4000 meters in the Alps in 82 days. For me, the cherry on the pie of a perfect day.

Le soleil se couche tout doucement. Dodo à 8h, demain grosse journée: on va tenter le Finsteraarhorn. Je gamberge un peu :-).

Sun is slowly setting. Bedtime, at 8pm. Tomorrow is a big day attempting Finsteraarhorn. Thinking hard about it :-).

Ballade fantastique et journée mémorable. Quelques moments où il a fallu réfléchir pour passer les crevasses mais rien de méchant. Belle distance tout de même... Par mauvais temps cela dit ça peut devenir scabreux. On a pas eu ce problème :-).

Fantastic hike and a day to remember. A few moments where we had to think how to cross crevasses but mostly a technically easy day. Long distance still... With bad weather, I suppose this can get pretty nasty. We didn't have this problem :-).
