Zermatt - Zmuttglestcher

Introduction

 
Cette randonnée fait partie d'un trek de 3 jours dans le haut Valais, de Saas-Fee à Zermatt en passant par Grächen. Les trois villages sont des petits bijous de traditions valaisannes et interdits aux voitures. La nature est sauvage (faune et flore impressionantes) et les 4000 mètres se comptent par dizaines.

This hike is part of a 3 days trek in upper Valais from Saas-Fee to Zermatt via Grächen. These 3 villages are pure traditional jewelry from this canton, cars are not allowed. The nature is wild, with amazing flowers and animals, with dozens of 4000 meters peaks around.

Route

A la base, je comptais traverser l'Augstbordpass pour entrer dans la très belle Turtmanntal. Seulement voila, je me reveille sous la pluie au Gornergrat Kulm... Entre la fatigue et la perspective d'une longue rando sous le brouillard et la pluie, un passage à 2900m, une descente glissante etc, je me suis dégonflé... En descendant sur Zermatt, j'ai vu une petite ouverture dans la vallée du Zmuttgletscher. Je me suis lancé.

I planned to cross the Augstbordpass to enter into the beautiful Turtmanntal. But then I woke up with the rain at Gornegrat Kulm... I was already quite tired and the thought of a long hike in the rain/fog, going up to 2900m, on a slippery path etc, made me chicken out... On the way down to Zermatt, I saw the Zmuttglestscher valley wasn't too bad so I took a shot.

J'ai pris le téléphérique vers Furi pour m'épargner 200 m de montée que je connais. Je me dirige vers Zmutt/Stafel. En bas Zermatt et derrière le groupe de Mischabel (Dom et Täschhorn notamment).

I took the cable car to Furi to spare myself the 200m climb I already knew. Then I head to Zmutt/Stafel. The picture shows Zermatt and Mischabel group (Dom and Täschhorn, to name a few) in the background.

Je passe Zmutt. Au fond c'est le Rimpfischhorn et le Strahlhorn je crois (tout les deux environ 4200m).

La mignonne petite montagne derrière, c'est la face nord du Cervin...  Un peu rageant de ne rien voir, mais les dieux de la montagne étaient avec moi ce jour là, ca va s'améliorer.

This pretty little mountain is the north face of the Matterhorn... A bit frustrating not to see it but I was about to get lucky...

Comme par magie, les nuages commencent à se disperser. Je tombe le poncho et commence à sourir. La vallée est vraiment jolie finalement !

A miracle happened, the clouds just faded out. I got rid of the poncho and started smiling. Pretty looking good valley after all !

Je continue en direction du fond de la vallée, la Tête Blanche et la Dent d'Herens ferment le cirque glaciaire. Sur la droite, les contreforts de l'Obergabelhorn  (4063 m).

I keep going towards the end of the valley. The Tête Blanche and Dent d'Herens shut the way. On the right starts the Obergabelhorn (4063 m).

Derrière, à gauche le groupe des Mischabel (et derrière Saas-Fee) et à droite le Monte Rosa. Au dessus des nuages, un peu à gauche du Mont Rose, on devine le Gornergrat Kulm, où je m'étais reveillé sous la pluie...

Behind me, the Mischabel group to the left (and Saas-Fee behind it) and the Monte Rosa to the right. Slightly above the clouds, a bit left from Monte Rosa we can see the Gornegrat Kulm where I woke up that morning.

Après facilement 30 min avec le doigt sur la gachette, à attendre que les nuages dégagent, ma prière est enfin exaucée ! Le Cervin.

After 30 min waiting for the perfect picture, I finally got it ! The Matterhorn.

Je continue ma boucle en retournant vers Zmutt.

I keep on my loop, going back to Zmutt.

Et nous y voila. Très mignon Zmutt avec ses petites maisons valaisannes. Et un bistro pour me désalterer.

Je contine de descendre. Le charme incroyable du Valais me frappe encore. En face, ce monstre sublime c'est le Täschhorn (4491 m).

Keep going down. The incredible charm of the Valais strikes me again. In the background, this gorgeous monster is the Täschhorn (4491 m).

Conclusion

Zermatt est l'un des berceaux de l'alpinisme mondial avec Chamonix et Grindewald. Aujourd'hui c'est une usine pour touristes du monde entier. Tout est y cher. Malgré sa beauté, la main street fait peur... Cela dit, dès qu'on s'écarte, la ville et ses alentours, les glaciers, la trentaine de 4000 m et les innombrables randonnées spectaculaires, tout ça vous transporte dans un autre monde. Vous etes au coeur du plus gros massif alpin. Oubliés les cars de touristes du monde entier, les montres à 10 000€ et les hotels 5 étoiles. Dès qu'on monte, la montagne reprend ses droits. Tout va bien.

Zermatt, along with Chamonix and Grindelwald, witnessed the birth of mountaineering. Today mass tourisme has taken over the place. Everything is expensive. Even though main street is beautiful, it scares me a bit... However, as soon as you walk a little, the town and its surrounding, the glaciers, the about 30 four thousand meters peaks and the countless spectacular hikes, all this takes you into another world. You are in the core of the biggest alpine range. Forget about the bus full with tourists, the 10 000€ watches and the 5 stars hotels: when you start climbing, the mountain takes over. Everything's fine.
