Entschligegrat

Mi-août ,j'ai exploré une vallée entre Kandersteg et Adelboden, dans l'Oberland bernois. Deux crêtes attiraient mon attention depuis quelques temps, l'Entschligegrat et l'Üschenengrat. Je n'ai fait finalement qu'un bout de la première mais le détour valait le coup.

Mid-august, I explored a valley between Kandersteg and Adelboden, in the Bernese Oberland. Two ridges were on my radar for a while:  the Entschligegrat and Üschenengrat. In the end I only did a part of the first one. It was worth the detour though.

Garé au pied du téléphérique montant à Sunnbüel, au fond de la Kandertal. Direction Üschenen puis la Entschligegrat. Je suis revenu par la même vallée.

Parked near the cable-car that goes to Sunnbüel, at the end of the Kandertal. Heading to Üschenen then Entschligegrat. I came back through the same valley.

Après les deux heures classique de voiture, je ne suis pas mécontent de démarrer. Belle matinée d'été mais je sais que les nuages vont se pointer donc je me dépêche. Au fond j’aperçois le Grosse Loner (3049 m), mastodonte entre Kandesteg et Adelboden. Je vais me faufiler dans la vallée en face pour le longer.

After the usual two hours of driving it feels good to start. Nice summer morning though I know clouds will come, therefore I try to hurry. On the background, I see the Grosse Loner (3049 m), big moutain between Kandersteg and Adelboden. I'll follow the valley ahead and walk below it.

Après une montée assez raide, j'arrive dans cette vallée, l'Üschenental.

After a pretty steep climb, I'm walking now in the valley, the Üschenental.

Ce Grosse Loner fait assez peur vu d'ici. Il y a 3 pics en fait: Vordere (3049 m), Mitllere et Hindere Loner. Note pour plus tard: la crête à gauche semble praticable...

From here, that Grosse Loner looks pretty scary. There are 3 peaks actually: Vordere (3049 m), Mitllere and Hindere Loner. The left ridge looks almost doable... Hmm...

Coup d’œil derrière moi. Au fond, Ärmighore et Dündehore. Kandersteg est au pied de ce dernier. Même le ruisseau à un nom, quoique moyennement original: Alpbach.

Je continue à avancer vers le fond de la vallée, un immense alpage finalement. Plusieurs fermes étagées. Je vais passer par le col à droite, section franchement raide.

Keep heading towards the end of valley, a huge high pasture actually. Several farms here and there. I'm going up that pass on the right hand side. That part will be quite steep.

Vers l'est, je les attendais avec impatience : Altels à gauche (le Balmhorn se cache derrière) et Rinderhorn à droite. A leur pied, s'étend la vallée qui va de Kandersteg à Leukerbad (canton du Valais) via le mythique col de la Gemmi.

Looking east, I was waiting for them: Altels on the left side (Balmhorn is just behind) and Rinderhorn on the right side. Below them lies the valley connecting Kandersteg to Leukerbad (canton Valais), via the mythical Gemmipass.

Intéressant tas de pierre n'est-ce pas ? Il répond au doux nom de Tschingellochtighore (2735 m). Il se situe sur la crête de l'Entschligegrat. Donnez moi 20 minutes et je serais à sa base.

Interesting pile of stones isn't it ? Its name is also interesting: Tschingellochtighore (2735 meters). It's on that ridge, the Entschligegrat. Gimme 20 minutes and I'll be at its foot.

Nous y voila. A l'arrière plan, c'est probablement le Daubenhorn (2942 m). Derrière c'est Leukerbad et la via ferrata la plus extrême de Suisse. Au programme un jour, évidemment...

There you go. On the background it's probably the Daubenhorn (2942 m). Behind that would be Leukerbad and the most extreme via ferrata in Switzerland. It's on the todo list, obviously...

Les nuages arrivent :-(. En bas, la vallée part où je suis monté. La grosse montagne à droite c'est le Doldenhorn.

Clouds are coming :-(. Down there is the valley from where I came. The big mountain on the right side is the Doldenhorn.

Vu de cet angle donc, le Grosse Loner a l'air faisable. J'ai repéré un top qui parle de T5 (randonnée alpine exigeante). S'il peut attendre l'an prochain, je suis son homme.

From that angle this Grosse Loner does look feasible. I saw some topos saying T5 (demanding alpine hike). Ok, please don't move until next year, I'll come over.

Je continue vers le sud avec sur la Entschligegrat. Je vais la quitter sur la gauche dans pas longtemps.

I'm on the Entschligegrat ridge, walking south. I'll exit soon though on the left.

En bas à droite. J'étais aussi venu pour voir ce joli alpage d'Engstligenalp (1950 m), non loin d'Aldeboden. Je passerais le voir de plus près un jour, en allant d'Adelboden à Lenk par exemple.

Down there, on the right side. I also came here to see this nice Engstligenalp pasture (1950 m). It's not far from Adelboden. I'll do it one day I guess, e.g. going from Adelboden to Lenk.

Je vois la deuxième crête de la journée. J'ai prévu de grimper dessus puis descendre de l'autre coté sur Sunnbüel pour choper le téléphérique. Hélas, ma batterie d'appareil photo me lâche. Ça, plus les nuages et mes premières ampoules aux pieds depuis 10 ans, c'en est trop. J'abandonne en prenant hors piste droit vers la voiture. Au final j'ai randonné pas loin de 6 heures, c'est pas si mal... Je reviendrais !

Now I can see the second ridge. I planned to walk it over and come down on the other side, to Sunnbüel where I can hop on a gondola. That's when the battery of my camera died... Plus the clouds and my first blisters in many years, that broke the camel back. I gave up and went straight down to the car. In the end I hiked around 6 hours so it's not so bad. I'll be back !

Vallée assez calme, on entends juste les vaches. Des crêtes faciles et des possibilités dans tout les sens. Et des beaux décors. Bonne journée. Encore tellement de choses à faire du coté de Kandersteg...

Fairly quiet valley. You only hear the cows. Easy ridges and lot's of options around. Beautiful landscapes. A nice day altogether. And still so many things to do around Kandersteg.
