Balmflue Südwände

Nous sommes fin novembre et la saison d'escalade s'éternise miraculeusement. Avec Dante on a fait une partie de la 'Balmflue Südwände'. L'une des plus longues voies du Jura, l'ambiance et la vue sur les Alpes sont vraiment magnifiques.

November is about to end and we are still rock climbing, miracles do exist. With Dante we partially did the 'Balmflue Südwände' climb, one of the longest climbs in the Jura. The atmosphere and the views over the alps are truely amazing.

En fait on voulais faire la 'Südgrat', grande voie juste à coté et on s'est trompé en démarrant la Südwände à la place. On s'est un peu perdu dans la Südwände, pas mal de court-circuits... Je m'en suis rendu compte en faisant la Südgrat pour de vrai en 2015 :-). Le reste de l'article est inedité.

In fact we wanted to climb the 'Südgrat', multi-pitch climb right next to it, but we got it wrong and started the Südwände instead. We got lost a little bit and took a few shortcuts. I realized this when doing for real the Südgrat in 2015. The following article is unchanged.

On démarre par une petite randonnée, environ 200 mètres de dénivelé. Au début sur un chemin balisé, puis hors piste mais identifiable.

We started with a little hike, close to 200 meters ascent. Nice warm-up. At first on an official trail, then off piste but visible.

Ambiance éthérée. Le plateau suisse est sous le brouillard mais on est tout prêt d’émerger.

Ethereal atmosphere. Thick fog on the Swiss plateau but we're about to pass above it.

On arrive au départ de la voie. Je fais équipe avec Dante. Raf et Marc montent ensemble. Un 4c sur la gauche et un 6a sur le droite. Je vous laisse deviner le choix de Dante :-).

We're at the start of the climb. I'm teaming up with Dante. Raf and Marc will climb separately. There's a 4c and a 6a to start. Guess which one Dante chose :-).

Un 6a qui va vite poser problème à mon équipier :-). Je rigole d'en bas, j'ai moins rigolé quand j'ai dû monter. C'est ptet pas du 6a finalement...

That 6a has puzzled my partner :-). I'm laughing down there. At first at least, I stopped laughing when climbing it. Perhaps that wasn't a 6a after all...

On s'est perdu un moment, l'escalade en grande voie s'est transformée en aventure alpiniste, à chercher notre chemin, se protégeant comme on peut. Sympa aussi. L'ambiance est très jolie.

We got lost at some point. Rock climbing turned into an easy mountaineering adventure, finding our way up, putting protections here and there. Fun too. Beautiful surroundings.

Je sais pas combien de passages on a raté, au final assez peu d'escalade dans le 5, pas mal de passages très agréables dans le 3 et 4.

Not sure how many sections we skipped. In the end, we didn't do not so many grade 5 sections, instead many cool 3 to 4 sections.

Et la vue... Surréelle mer de nuages sur le plateau suisse. Les Alpes au fond. On est irradié de soleil. J'ai chaud, à 1000 mètres, fin novembre ! Les saisons se suivent et ne se ressemblent pas...

And the view... Surreal sea of clouds above the Swiss plateau, with the Alps on the background. We got our fill of sunshine. I'm hot, at 1000 meters, end of November! Seasons come and go, and none is alike the other...

Super ce passage en 3-4 sur cette petite arête finale. On s'amuse comme des gosses.

Really cool 3-4 section on the final ridge. We're like kids, having fun.

Les Alpes un peu évanescentes ce jour là mais beau fond d'écran quand même.

The Alps were a bit misty that day but they still made a cool background.

Arrivés au sommet Balmfluechöpfli à 1290 mètres. On profite de la vue. La côte du Jura s'étire vers le sud, la marée monte.

At the summit (Balmfluechöpfli, 1290 meters) and now enjoying the view. The Jura shore stretches southward, the tide is high.

Ambiance surréelle.

On redescend en 25 minutes par un petit chemin boueux non marqué pour se retrouver au pied des falaises. On devine les ruines d'un château. En attendant Raf et Marc qui ont suivi un autre itinéraire finalement, on va faire un peu de tourisme.

It took us 25 min on a muddy unmarked trail to come back down at the cliffs. We saw the ruines of some castle. While we wait for Raf and Marc, who went on a different climb, we did some tourism.

Faire le débile, ça c'est fait.

Super coin, super journée. On est bien décidé à y revenir plusieurs fois, pour refaire la voie proprement cette fois et puis faire les autres à coté. Un petit paradis à 1 heure de la maison.

Great corner, great day. We'll come back probably more than once, to do that climb properly this time and to do the other ones around. A nice little heaven, one hour from home.
