Schilthorn

Le Schilthorn (2970 m), parmi les montagnes les plus connues de l'Oberland bernois, fut ma première vraie conquête en Suisse. Cette randonnée date de 2008 et fut à l'origine pour ainsi dire de ma passion pour les alpes suisses. Un choix évident pour mon centième article sur ce blog.

Mount Schilthorn (2970 m), one of the most famous peaks in the Bernese Oberland, was my first true achievement in Switzerland, back in 2008. I fell in love for the Swiss Alps because of that hike. An obvious choice therefore for my hundredth post on this blog.

Route

A l'époque, je m'amusais sous Google Earth :-). Depuis Stechelberg, dans la Lauterbrunnental, montée à Gimmewald puis droit vers le Schilthorn. Descente par les téléphériques. Environ 10 km, 2100 mètres de dénivelé positif, 6.15 heures environ selon le temps standard. C'est dur !

Back then I was discovering Google Earth :-). Start from Stechelberg, in the Lauterbrunnental, climb to Gimmewald and then straight up to Schilthorn. Downhill using the cable cars. Around 10 km, 2100 meters ascent and 6.15 hours according to standard time. It's tough!

La montée entre Stechelberg et Gimmewald est principalement en forêt. La partie photogénique débute à Gimmewald, charmant petit village très suisse, non loin de Mürren.

The path between Stechelberg and Gimmewald goes mostly through a forrest. The photogenic part starts after Gimmewald, charming super-Swiss tiny village, not far from Mürren.

Le passage dans les alpages de Gimmewald est tout aussi charmant. En face, une trilogie qui ne me quittera plus: Eiger, Mönch et Jungfrau. Je faisais mes débuts de photographe hein :-)

The way up through the mountain pastures of Gimmewald is charming too. I was discovering the famous Eiger-Mönch-Jungfrau trilogy, which I saw a million times since. I was learning photography huh :-).

Au sud, la poursuite de l'impressionnante série de faces nord, qui sépare le Lauterbrunnental (Berne) du Lötschental (Valais). 

Looking south, the impressive north faces serie continues, separating the Lauterbrunnental (Berne) and Lötschental (Valais).




Belle ambiance... Ca donne envie de randonner non ?

Au centre, la Jungfrau (4158 m), ma reine des neiges.

At the center, my pretty Jungfrau (4158 m).

Je découvrais ces petits sentiers escarpés qui invitent à l'aventure.

I was discovering these tiny craggy paths, taking you for an adventure.

Et ces petits lacs glaciaires si photogéniques...

And these glacier lakes. So photogenic...

 

Sans oublier la flore :-). Une belle androsace des Alpes. Respect pour ces petites beautés qui poussent dans des conditions extrêmes.

Not to forget the plants :-). Here's a nice Androsace alpina. Respect for these little beauties growing in extreme conditions.

Elle porte même un nom cette mare, le Grauseewli !

Le Schilthorn est en vue.

Birg, la dernière station intermédiaire avant le Schilthorn. Le paysage devient lunaire, schisteux.

Birg is the last cable stop before Schilthorn. The landscape becomes lunar, schisty.

La dernière montée, relativement épuisante d'ailleurs après 2000 mètres de dénivelé...

Last climb, quite exhausting actually after nearly 2000 meters ascent.




Au sud-ouest, le Gspaltenhorn, Blümlisalp et le col du Sefinenfurgga, passage entre Sefinental et Kiental.

South-west, we see the Gspaltenhorn, Blümlisalp and the Sefinenfurgga pass, lying between Sefinental and Kiental.

Et me voila au Schilthorn et son fameux restaurant qui tourne, le Piz Gloria. Vue spectaculaire à 360° sur les Alpes bernoises.

And here I am, at the Schilthorn, and its famous revolving restaurant, the Piz Gloria. Spectacular 360° view over the  Bernese Alps.
 

Les amateurs de James Bond se souviennent qu'Au service secret de sa Majesté a été tourné en partie ici dans les années 60. Quelques photos dans les couloirs le rappelle, rien n'a changé depuis!

James Bond fans know that At her Majesty's secret service was partly shot there. Some pictures in the corridors will remind it to you: nothing has changed since!

Belle, longue, croisant nombre d'étages alpins, c'est une randonnée classique parmi les classiques, à tel point que, chose rare, je l'ai faite plusieurs fois... Ce sommet offre également d'autres versant tout aussi sympas (depuis Kiental ou Soustal). Le Schilthorn c'est clairement la montagne que j'ai le plus grimpé et de loin... Une invitation à contempler et se dépasser.

Beautiful, long, across many alpine layers, it's a classic between classics. So classic that I did it several times, an exception to my rule... That peak has more routes which are nice too (from Kiental or Soustal). The Schilthorn is clearly the mountain I climbed the most. It's an invitation to contemplation and challenge.
