Hörnlihütte

Le Cervin est l'une des montagnes les plus belles et connues au monde. Elle est située au sud de la Suisse, à la frontière entre le canton du Valais et l'Italie. Je l'avais tenté il y a 3 ans mais le mauvais temps avait gâché la fête (article). Cette fois ce fut la bonne. Avec mon guide Sébastien, on a fait la traversée depuis la Suisse vers l'Italie. Le premier jour, on est monté à la Hörnlihütte.

The Matterhorn is one of nicest and most famous mountains in the world. It is located in south Switzerland, canton Valais, at the border with Italy. I tried it back in 2013 but bad weather stopped us from even starting (article). This time we were more lucky and with my guide Sebastien we traversed it from Switzerland to Italy. The first day we went to the Hörnlihütte.

Le Cervin depuis Zermatt, la ville valaisanne à son pied qui use et abuse de cette légende. Tourisme de masse. C'est beau cela dit...

C'est une jolie promenade pour aller à cette Hörnlihütte (3260 m).

On voit le refuge mais aussi surtout cette arête du Hörnli. C'est là qu'on va passer. Gloups... On voit le sommet suisse à 4478 mètres.

The hut is there but also that Hörnli ridge and the Swiss summit at 4478 meters. We are going there, gloopss...

Le refuge et la vue sur le Mont Rose, Lyskam, Breithorn et Petit Cervin. C'est très beau mais je dois avouer que je n'aime vraiment pas ce refuge. Et l'extension faite en 2013 n'y a rien changé. Plus rien à voir avec un refuge, c'est un hôtel de haute montagne et dont le prix scandaleux n'inclue pas le sourire. La réservation payante est obligatoire et vous risquez de perdre votre argent en cas de mauvais temps. Bivouac au dessus de 2800 interdit sous peine d'amende de 5000 CHF ! Repas light et regards de travers quand on demande du rab. Ah, et les guides Zermattois ont priorité au départ, on leur ouvre la porte (fermée à clef la nuit) avant les autres. Un refuge unique donc... La Suisse alémanique version extrême mélangée à l'alpinisme de masse. Nous étions pas loin de 80 à tenter le sommet dans ce refuge. Le contraste avec le refuge italien fait le lendemain est absolument frappant. Je voulais vraiment éviter de dormir à cette Hörnlihütte mais la météo ne nous a pas laissé trop de choix. Je la déconseille sincèrement.

The hut and the view over Monte Rosa, Lyskam, Breithorn and Klein Matterhorn. View's really nice but I have to say I really dislike this hut. The extension made in 2013 makes no difference. It's not a hut anymore, it's a stupidely expensive hotel in the mountain and you are not going to get a smile for that price. You may lose money if you cancel because of bad weather. Bivouac is forbidden above 2800 meters and that's a 5000 CHF fine if you try. Meals are light and they don't like when you ask for more. Oh, and Zermatt guides have priority over everybody else: the door is locked and they get to go out before the rest of the cattle. It's quite a unique hut... Extreme Alemannic Switzerland combined with mass mountaineering. We were around 80 to attempt the Matterhorn that day! The contrast with the italian hut we did the day after is simply stunning. I really wanted to avoid that hut but the forecasts did not leave us a choice. I sincerely advise against it.

Bref, on est pas venu pour admirer le refuge mais pour ce gros tas de cailloux. On pose les sacs et on va explorer un peu l'arête. Demain on fera le début de nuit donc autant savoir où passer...

Anyways, we didn't go here for the hut but for that big pile of rocks. We dropped the rucksacks and went exploring a bit the start of that ridge. Tomorrow it will be dark at first, might as well know where to go...

L'une des plus belles montagnes au monde certes mais rocher franchement pourri par moment. Un gros tas de pus comme disait Séb :-).
