Zermatt - Oberrothorn

C'est le premier août, la fête nationale suisse ! Dante, Shelley, Alice et moi avons profité du week-end prolongé pour faire une randonné de trois jours au cœur du Valais.

It's August 1st, the Swiss national day ! Dante, Shelley, Alice and I used the long week-end for a three days hike deep in the Valais.

 

Premier jour

Avant de déambuler dans Zermatt (1600 m), plein à craquer, et d'admirer l'exceptionnel feu d'artifice, on va visiter le fameux Stellisee et un beau sommet avec hallucinante vue à 360° : l'Oberrothorn (3414 m).

Before wandering around in crowded Zermatt (1600 m) and watching the stunning fireworks, we are up to visit the famous Stellisee and a beautiful summit offering a 360° view : the Oberrothorn (3414 m).

Route

Départ très très matinal de Basel pour Zermatt (3h30 de train) et funiculaire pour Sunnegga. Direction Stellisee, Oberrothorn puis Unterrothorn pour retour sur Zermatt par télécabine et funiculaire.

Very very early start in Basel to Zermatt (3h30 train) and cog train to Sunnegga. Heading then to Stellisee, Oberrothorn and Unterrothorn to go back to Zermatt using the gondola and the funicular.

Dès l'arrivée à Zermatt, impossible de la louper. Le Cervin (Matterhorn en allemand), sûrement l'une des plus belles montagnes au monde, vous en met plein la vue du haut de ses 4478 mètres.

As soon as you reach Zermatt you can't really miss it. The Matterhorn, 4478 m, surely one of the nicest mountains in the world, shows off.

On se jette dans le funiculaire et on arrive à Sunnegga où visiblement on ne manque pas de sentiers de randonnée...

Le Cervin sera le thème de la journée... Légère obsession de ma part, d'autant que je devais le grimper en septembre !

Ok, the Matterhorn will be the theme of the day. I have a slight obsession for that mountain, especially since I was planning to climb it in September !

Presque arrivé au lac Stellisee, point de vue fameux sur le Cervin. Au fond à gauche, Allalinhorn et Rimpfischhorn, deux jolis 4000.

Nous y voila. L'un des lacs les plus photographié de Suisse. C'est évidemment mieux sans vent pour avoir le reflet... Bon, je me plaindrai pas de la météo ce jour là, c'est joli quand même !

There you go. One of the most photographed lakes in Switzerland. It's obviously nicer when the wind doesn't blow, you get the reflection... Ok, I won't complain about the weather of that day, it was nice anyway !

On continue de monter, avec la frontière italienne qui apparaît tout doucement. De gauche à droite: Castor et Pollux, les jumeaux de Zermatt, puis l'impressionnant Breithorn. Enfin la petite pyramide noire, le Petit Cervin (Klein Matterhorn), avec le plus haut téléphérique d'Europe à 3883 m et point de départ de la piste de ski sur glacier. Dante et moi devrions grimper tout ça aussi en septembre :-).

While we go up, the border with Italy appears slowly. From left to right: Castor and Pollux, the Zermatt twins, then the impressive Breithorn. Finally, the tiny black pyramid, the Klein Matterhorn (3883 m), equiped with the highest gondola in Europe. There starts the glacier ski domain. Dante and I should climb all this in September :-).

On dépasse l'Unterrothorn. Au fond à droite, la Dent Blanche et l'Obergabelhorn.

Sa majesté nous présente sa face est à gauche et sa terrifiante face nord à droite. Au milieu, la crête du Hörnligrat qu'empruntent la plupart des alpinistes. A son pied, la Hörnlihütte, point de départ de la voie normale. Crainte et excitation se mélangent !

Her Majesty shows us her east face on the left side, her terrifying north face to the right side. In the middle is the Hörnligrat ridge, which most of the mountaineers take. Near its bottom, the Hörnlihütte, start of the climbing route. Fear and excitement !

L'altitude se fait sentir, l'Oberrothorn culmine à 3414 m au milieu de ce paysage lunaire.

The air is already pretty thin. The Oberrothorn, 3414m, looks like the moon.

Pfiou j'y suis arrivé. Là haut, la vue est parfaite. Vers le nord, la vallée Mattertal s'étale jusqu'à la vallée du Rhône, bordée au nord par les Alpes de Berne. Tient, on distingue le superbe Bietschhorn ! Sur la gauche, le monstrueux Weisshorn, 4506 m. Le Bishorn est juste plus bas sur sa crête nord.

Pheww, made it to the top. Up there the view is perfect. To the north, the Mattertal valley flows to the Rhone valley, with the Bernese Oberland up north. Hey, I can see the gorgeous Bietschhorn ! To the left side, the monstrous Weisshorn, 4506 m. The Bishorn is just a bit lower on the north ridge.

Vers le sud-est, le massif du Monte Rosa (4634 m), plus haut sommet suisse quoique sur la frontière avec l'Italie. Il est entouré à gauche par le glacier du Gornergletscher et à droite par le flippant Lyskamm, 4479 m.

Looking south-east, the Monte Rosa range (4634 m), highest Swiss summit, though shared with Italy. To its left is the Gornerglestcher glacier and to its right the scary Lyskamm (4479 m).

Et le clou du spectacle, la vue vers l'ouest. Ça calme nan ? Les principaux sommets de gauche à droite : le Cervin, la Dent Blanche, l'Obergabelhorn, le Zinalrothorn et le Weisshorn. En bas, on voit l'Unterrothorn, prochain arrêt. Et Zermatt tout en bas.

And the cherry on the pie, the view to the west. Pretty cool huh ? From left to right: Matterhorn, Dent Blanche, Obergabelhorn, Zinalrothorn and Weisshorn. Down there we see Unterrothorn, our next stop. And Zermatt on the valley floor.

Randonnée obligatoire pour tout amateur de 4000 suisses ! On peut en compter une trentaine autour sur les 82 que comptent les Alpes... La flore est aussi à la hauteur. Oubliez la faune par contre, trop de touristes ! Une journée, et une soirée, mémorable...

Mandatory hike for all swiss 4000meters lovers ! You can count there around 30 of them, over the 82 in total in the Alps... Flowers are also pretty nice. Forget about animals though, too many tourists. That day, and the evening, was just memorable...
