Balmhorn

La Balmhorn est une belle grosse montagne située près de Kandersteg, entre le Gasteretal (canton de Berne) et le Lötschental (canton du Valais). Elle culmine à 3698 mètres et offre un panorama exceptionel. La voie normale, cotée PD, passe par son arête sud-ouest, la Zackengrat, et un final en neige assez facile.

Balmhorn is a nice and big mountain near Kandersteg, between Gasteretal (canton Bern) and Lötschental (canton Valais). Up there at 3698 meters you get an incredible overview. The normal route is rated PD and goes on the south-west rocky then snowy ridge, the Zackengrat.

Départ vendredi après le boulot, on fonce vers Kandersteg et on choppe juste à temps la dernière benne qui monte à Sunnbüel (1930 m). On est heureux, ça nous évite 700 mètres de montée supplémentaire avec le gros sac... On se dirige vers ce vallon en face, entre l'Altels et le Rinderhorn. Sympa la rando après le boulot.

We took off after work on a Friday, heading fast to Kandersteg where we got the last cable car just in time to Sunnbüel (1930 m). Felt happy about that, it saves 700 meters ascent with the big backpack... Now we are walking to that glen ahead, between Altels and Rinderhorn. It's nice to hike after work.

On entre dans le vallon. On ne prends pas le bon sentier mais c'est pas bien grave, il  faut monter sur la moraine en face.

Jolie moraine très pratique. Elle nous amène à la zone de bivouac, à 2440 mètres. On monte les tentes, se fait un bon gueuleton et dodo ! Demain on grimpe au col, au fond de la vallée, en passant sur la neige.

That moraine is quite useful, it gets us right to the bivouac area at 2440 meters.  We put on the tents, cook something nice and bedtime ! Tomorrow we go up to that saddle up there, at the end of valley, going on the snow fields.

Lever 5 heures. On suit les cairns qui amènent au glacier. La montée vers le col et l'arête débute. Environ 500 mètres pour arriver au Zackenpass (3030 m), le col là haut.

Wake up at 5am. We followed the cairns, leading us to the glacier where the climb to the pass starts. Around 500 meters ascent to get to the Zackenpass (3030 m).

Le passage n'est pas dur mais assez raide, alors on s'encorde et met les crampons histoire d'être en sécurité. En bas, on voit bien la moraine, et notre zone de bivouac. Derrière, le soleil arrive sur le Grosse Loner.

It's not difficult but it's fairly steep, so we put on rope and crampons to be safe. Down there we see our moraine and bivouac. On the background, the set shines on Grosse Loner.

La montée est rapide et efficace. Au Zackenpass, la vue est superbe déjà avec les Alpes valaisannes au fond. Je n'avais que mon petit Sony alpha, pas de zoom :-(

Quick and efficient climb. At the Zackenpass, the view is already great, the Valaisan Alps on the background. No zooms, only had my tiny Sony alpha :-(

A gauche, la crête Zackengrat. Elle est facile, quasi pas d'escalade, mais quelques passages un peu exposés et du rocher verglacé. Rester attentif. On voit déjà le sommet et la croix, juste à droite du gros paté en neige en face.

To our left, the Zackengrat ridge. It's easy, you just walk climb but some exposed parts and black ice, so focus is recommended. We already see the summit and the cross, just to the right side of that big snow peak up there.

On monte un petit peu et le Mont Blanc apparait au fond. A droite, le Rinderhorn (3448 m) et une impressionnante arête est.

A few minutes later, Mont Blanc pops up in the distance. To the right side, Rindenhorn (3448 m) and an impressive east ridge.

En face, en noir, le domaine skiable de Leukerbad. Au fond, Bishorn/Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Cervin, Dent Blanche, Grand Combin etc.

L'arête rocheuse se termine, on rechausse les crampons. Ce n'est pas très pentu là haut, ça reste facile mais c'est suffisamment exposé pour retenir votre attention. Au fond à droite, la Gitzigrat, l'arête sud-est du Balmhorn qui descend au Lötschpass.

The rocky ridge is over now, we put on the crampons again. It's not very steep and remains easy but it's exposed enough to keep you focused. On the background, right side, that is the Gitzigrat, the south-east ridge of Balmhorn which goes down to Lötschpass.

On s'approche du pré-sommet (3667 m) à gauche. Le sommet (3698 m) et la croix à droite.

Antoine. En bas à gauche, la Zackengrat qu'on vient de monter. Derrière, le Rinderhorn. Plus loin, avec quelques nuages, le Wildstrubel.

Leukerbad apparait en bas. C'est beau ici... J'ai un ski de rando qui est tombé dans ce coin l'hiver dernier en montant au Ferdenrothorn :-).

Leukerbad appears. It's pretty here... I lost a touring ski in the area last winter when climbing Ferdenrothorn :-).

Arrivés au pré-sommet, on découvre la vue vers l'est. Le superbe glacier du Kanderfirn et l'Oberland au fond (Eiger, Mönch et Jungfrau notamment). A gauche c'est le Doldenhorn puis les très attirantes Blümlisalp.

Made it to the pre-summit, seeing now the views to the east. The magnificent Kanderfirn glacier and the Oberland on the background (including Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau). More to the right, Doldenhorn and the pretty Blümlisalp.

On y est presque. A droite, voilé par les nuages, le Bietschhorn, 'roi du Valais'.

Almost there. On the right side, clouded, that's Bietschhorn, 'King of Valais'.

Un unique pont de neige à passer. En fin de saison, ca doit être rigolo de passer cette crevasse...

A single snow bridge to cross. Later in the season, that crevasse must be challenging...

Au nord, la Kandertal et le Frutigtal qui se termine avec le Niesen.

On est au sommet, en neige. La croix est quelques mètres plus bas sur du rocher. On est les premiers arrivés depuis la voie normale, deux suisses sont montés depuis le Lötschpass (AD+).

We are at the snowy summit. The cross is a few meters down, on rocks. We are the first arrived from the normal route but two Swiss guys already went up from the Lötschpass (AD+).

Vue magnifique à l'est. On voit la Petersgrat (pile en face) et le Finsteraarhorn (tout au fond), deux coins visités cette année avec Dante. L'Aletschhorn emerge aussi bien, je le tenterai bien l'an prochain celui là...

Great views to the east. We see Petersgrat (just ahead) and Finsteraarhorn (very background) both visited this year with Dante. The tempting Aletschhorn is also quit visible, might try it next year...

J'etrenne ma nouvelle corde :-). 40 mètres, 8.8mm, c'est nickel pour cette course.

On descends. C'est le seul moment un peu chaud finalement, on y va tranquille.

Down. That part is the only risky part, so we take it slow.




La descente de la Zackengrat se fait sans soucis. En face, le Grosse Loner et notre moraine en bas.

On est restés encordés jusqu'à bas.

La descente du Zackenpass sera franchement pénible. Un pierrier casse-genoux très glissant. Sur la photo, on est quasi sortis. On va traverser direction la zone d'ébouli, où une sente cairnée nous ramène à la zone de bivouac.

The downhill from Zackenpass was quite painful. A slippery scree that hates your knees. On that pic, we are almost through. We'll traverse towards these fallen rocks, where some cairns will take us back to our bivouac.

Y a plus qu'à packer maintenant !

On reprends la moraine. Un peu casse gueule à la descente, j'ai glissé plusieurs fois, du bon coté heureusement !

On est revenus sur le plateau, petite promenade buccolique pour revenir vers Sunnbüel. En face, l'Ärmighore. Il nous reste un téléphérique et deux heures de route pour clore cette belle journée.

And back on the plateau, charming little stroll to get back to Sunnbüel. Ahead that's Ärmighore. One cable car and two hours driving and we're home !

Course agréable et facile, à part le pierrier sous le Zackenpass. Je me demande s'il peut s'éviter par les rochers à gauche... En tout cas, superbe sommet et belle ambiance. J'y retournerai bien en essayant d'autres voies d'accès... Merci à Antoine pour un bivouac et une ascension sympathiques !

Easy and pleasant climb, apart from that screen down the Zackenpass. Maybe it can be avoided... Anyway, great summit and atmosphere. I'd like to go back, trying other routes. Thanks to Antoine for a cool bivouac and climb !
