Breithorn (Zermatt)

Ca y est ! La semaine d'alpinisme tant attendue démarre. Après un échauffement la veille sur la très belle via ferrata au dessus de Zermatt, nous (Dante, le guide et moi) prenons le téléphérique pour le Petit Cervin (3883 m). Au programme : le Breithorn (4164 m), probablement le 4000 mètres le plus facile des Alpes. Entrainement plutôt sympa. Puis direction le refuge des guides d'Ayas en Italie.

This is it. The long-awaited mountaineering week finally starts. After a warm-up yesterday on the via ferrata above Zermatt, we (Dante, our guide and mysfelf) take the gondola up to Kleine Matterhorn (3883 m). On the agenda: the Breithorn (4164 m), probably the easiest 4000 meters in the Alps. Nice training. Then we'll head to the Ayas guides hut in Italy.

Depuis le Petit Cervin, le Breithorn c'est ça. Un gros pâté de neige pas bien méchant. Cela dit on traverse un glacier donc on s'encorde et on écoute son guide !

From the Kleine Matterhorn, that is the Breithorn. A big pack of snow, looking easy. However, you need to traverse a glacier, so you rope yourself up and you listen to the guide !

Le voila le glacier, sur le Breithornplateau. Joli non ? Pas mal de cordées devant et derrière.

Sur le plateau, la vue est sympathique. Au nord, le Petit Cervin tout à gauche. Au fond, les magnifiques Zinalrothorn (à gauche) et Weisshorn se font face. Notez bien le Zinalrothorn, il est au programme de la semaine. Il est superbe non ? Les alpes de Berne sont dans les nuages.

On the plateau the view is pretty cool. Looking north, the Kleine Matterhorn on the left side. On the background, the gorgeous Zinalrothorn (left) and Weisshorn are facing each other. Take note of that Zinalrothorn, it's on the agenda this week. Looks great doesn't it ? The Bernese Alps are in the clouds.

Presque une autoroute ce Breithorn. Faut dire, faire un 4000 avec juste 300 mètres de dénivelé facile, forcément ça attire du monde. Je vous présente notre guide, Sébastien (son site), qui va beaucoup patienter cette semaine :-).

A peine le temps de chausser les crampons et on est déjà en haut, 4164 mètres d'altitude ! Dante fait son premier 4000 il me semble. Moi, je bat mon record d'altitude tient. Pile derrière nous, la crête du Breithorn suivie du Lyskamm (4479 m) et sur la gauche, les innombrables pointes du Monte Rosa, plus haut massif suisse (quoique partagé avec l'Italie).

Well that was a quick climb, here we stand at 4164 meters ! I think it's Dante's first 4000 meters (more than 13 000 feet for our US readers). And I beat my altitude personal high. Right behind us is the Breithorn ridge, followed by Lyskamm (4479 m). On the left side the countless peaks of Monte Rosa, highest swiss range, though shared with Italy.

Dante, I look so much taller than you don't I :-D ? Quite a change from your pics !

Coté ouest, la vue est sympa aussi. Dans le prolongement de la crête, c'est le Cervin coté italien, entouré de la Dent d'Hérens (4171 m) et de Dent Blanche (4357 m). Cette crête c'est d'ailleurs la frontière italo-suisse. La bonne bouffe c'est à gauche, on y va !

To the west, view's interesting too. Ahead of the ridge is the italian side of Matterhorn, bordered by Dent d'Herens (4717 m) and Dent Blanchge (4357). This whole ridge is actually the border between Italy and Switzerland. Good food is on the left side, let's go !

Vous avez remarqué le gros pâté sur la photo précédente ? Attendez je vous zoom. Et oui, le Mont Blanc coté italien, séparé de nous par tout un tas de vallées latérales au val d'Aoste.

On the last pic, did you notice the big mountain on the background ? Wait, let me zoom a bit. Yep, that's Mont Blanc, italian side. Lot's of valleys between us, all flowing to the Aosta valley.




Belle crête... Elle m'a donné envie de faire la traverse complète du Breithorn (autrement plus longue que le petit morceau qu'on a fait). Hélas, on va descendre très rapidement sur l'Italie pour aller chercher le refuge.

Nice ridge isn't it... Now I want to do the full Breithorn traverse (much longer than the small bit we did that day)... Unfortunately, we'll leave it soon and climb down to our italian hut.

La descente a commencé. Le refuge se trouve plus bas, sur une arête près du glacier. A vol d'oiseau c'est rien, mais il faut contourner les séracs. On longe le Breithorn coté italien pendant un moment donc.

Downhill started. The hut is below, on the edge of a glacier. As crow flies it's pretty close but we need to go around the seracs. So we'll go along the italian side of Breithorn for a while.

On tombe bientôt sur les jumeaux de Zermatt : Pollux (4092 m) et Castor (4223 m). Demain, on fera le Pollux en passant par cette belle arête rocheuse sud.

We almost bumped into Zermatt's twins : Pollux (4092 m) and Castor (4223 m). Tomorrow, we'll do the Pollux, taking this lovely south rocky ridge.

Un joli col de haute altitude: le Zwillingsjoch (le col des jumeaux). Ça rejoint le Gornergletscher et Zermatt.

Après avoir évité toutes les crevasses, on arrive au refuge des guides d'Ayas (3420 m), du nom de la vallée plus bas. C'est un refuge 5 étoiles: toilettes à l'intérieur et presque tolérables, des lits une personne dans des chambres pour 4, wifi gratuit, de la nourriture et des sourires à italienne. Y a même une douche ! Je pense déménager bientôt.

We avoided all the crevasses and made it to the Ayas guides hut (3420 m), named after the valley below. It's a 5 stars hut : toilets are inside and almost ok, single beds, 4 people rooms, free Wifi and italian food and smiles. Even a shower, my god ! I'm thinking moving in soon.

Une bien belle journée, assez facile. Et un 4000 dans la poche. Demain sera déjà plus dur, on remonte pour aller faire le Pollux et retraverser jusqu'au Petit Cervin.

A nice and fairly easy day. And one 4000 meters we can scratch off the list. Tomorrow will be tougher, we go up the Pollux and traverse back to the Kleine Matterhorn.
