Muottas Muragl

Ce week-end d'Ascension je suis parti 4 jours dans les Grisons, au sud-est de la Suisse. Plus grand canton de Suisse, il est facile de s'y perdre dans ce dédale de vallées. Comme le Valais ou l'Oberland bernois, les Grisons c'est un charme bien particulier, à chemin entre les Alpes et Italie. Le 3èm jour de mon trip, j'ai randonné dans la vallée la plus fameuse des Grisons, l'Engadine, où se situe Saint-Moritz (1800 m). On n'est pas où n'importe ici, la ville a accueilli 2 fois les Jeux Olympiques d'hiver ! A part quelques brefs passages en voiture, les Grisons étaient encore pour moi une Terra Incognita. Le plaisir fut total.


During Ascension week-end, I went 4 days in Grisons (Graübunden), south-east of Switzerland. Largest canton of the country, it's fairly easy to get lost in these valleys. Like the Valais or the Bernese Oberland, Grisons has a distinct charm, between Alps and Italy. On the third day of the trip, I hiked in Engadin, the most famous valley in Grisons, where Saint-Moritz is. It's quite something there, the city hosted the winter Olympics Games twice ! Apart from some brief road trips, Grisons was pretty much Terra Incognita to me. Nothing but pleasure.

Depuis Samedan, j'ai tenté de rejoindre Muottas Muragl mais j'ai perdu la trace. J'ai longé le funiculaire un moment à la place du chemin... La haut, j'ai continué à me promener avant de descendre dans le Val Muragl. De là, j'ai suivi Alp Languard puis Pontresina. Enfin, j'ai rejoint Sankt-Moritz via le Lej da Staz.

From Samedan, I tried to follow Muottas Muragl but I lost the trail. I ended up following the cog train railway for a while... Up there, I wandered around until I went down in Val Muragl. From there I followed Alp Languard and Pontresina. Finally, I headed to Sankt-Moritz, via Lej da Staz.

Je me dirige vers la forêt, vers Muttoas Muragl. L'ambiance me plaît immédiatement.

Bon les panneaux ne sont pas les meilleurs de Suisse par contre, me suis perdu. J'ai fini par arriver sur le funiculaire qui monte à Muottas Muragl. Montée un peu monotone mais qui a le mérite d'être rapide grâce aux escaliers. J'ai accroché les 900 mètres/heures :-).

OK, the signposts aren't the best ones in Switzerland. I got lost until I hit the cog train on its way up to Muottas Muragl. The climb became a bit boring but at least I was fast on these stairs. Almost 900 meters per hour :-).

Le sommet n'est pas bien loin (2453 m), j'arrive rapidement à Muottas Muragl. Je connais ce nom depuis des années et la raison m’apparaît aujourd'hui évidente. C'est clairement l'une des plus belles vues de Suisse avec le Niederhorn, l'Eggishorn et la Gornergrat (au dessus de Zermatt). 4 jolis lacs: Staz, Sankt-Moritz, Silvaplana et Silsersee au fond, prêt du Malojapass à la frontière avec l'Italie.

The summit wasn't far away (2453 m) so I made my way up quickly to Muottas Muragl. I know this name for years (thanks to you Urs) and today it's obvious why. It's clearly one of nicest views in Switzerland with Niederhorn, Eggishorn and Gornergrat (above Zermatt). 4 nice lakes: Staz, Sankt-Moritz, Silvaplana et Silsersee on the background, near Malojapass at the Italian border.

Je me dirige vers le Val Muragl. Au fond le Piz Languard (3261 m). Un chemin de randonnée y mène depuis l'autre versant. Il est officiellement sur ma liste !

Heading now to Val Muragl. On the background is Piz Languard (3261 m). A hiking trail goes all the way up, from the other side. It's officially on my todo list now!

Cette vue me suit une bonne partie de la journée, c'est simplement magnifique.

I got that view for a long time. It's just gorgeous. I couldn't get enough.

Rapide pique-nique dans le Val Muragl. On voit Muottas Muragl à la fin de la crête. Je vous laisse deviner quel versant est l'ubac et lequel est l'adret. Je vais chausser les raquettes à neige et me frayer un chemin pour contourner ce val Muragl. N'a pas été simple à cause du devers et de la neige profonde, à la limite entre aventure et galère :-).

Quick lunch in Val Muragl. You can still see Muottas Muragl at the end of the ridge. Can you guess which are the north and south sides :) ? I'm now gonna put the snowshoes on and try to find my way around this Val Muragl. It wasn't easy due to the deep snow and inclination. Somewhere between adventure and hellish :-).

Ce qui m'a surpris le plus dans les Grisons c'est la place que prends la forêt.  Dans le reste de la Suisse, les alpages sont roi. Ici, on pourrait presque se croire en Alaska.

What surprized me the most in Grisons was the forest. Usually in Switzerland, you mostly see pastures and cows, not here. You could almost think you're in Alaska.

J'arrive à la verticale de Pontresina, en face du val Roseg. Au fond du val, à gauche, le Piz Bernina, le seul 4000 des Grisons. Là encore, le paysage me bluff. Le sentier d'altitude est vraiment agréable. Ca sent super bon en plus.

I'm now above Pontresina, facing Val Roseg. At the end of that valley, on the left side, is Piz Bernina, the only 4000 meters in Grisons. There again, the landscape amazes me. This high trail is just nice and it smells great.

Après une demie-heure de marche, j'arrive au surprenant Lej da Staz. Oui oui, c'est en Suisse, pas dans les Rocheuses canadiennes !

After half an hour walking, I arrived to the surprizing Lej da Staz. Yeah yeah, that's Switzerland, not Canadian Rocky mountains!

J'arrive bientôt au lac de Saint-Moritz et j'ai comme l'impression que ça va valoir le coup d’œil également !

Qu'est-ce que je disais ?! Wow...

As I thought ! Wow...

Super le lac. Je prendrais bien une barque pour en faire le tour. Mon hôtel, à Saint Moritz Bad (au fond) m'attends. Après 3 jours de randonnée, un peu de repos sera le bienvenu.

Nice lake. I wish I could take a boat and tour around it. My hotel, in St Moritz Bad (background) is waiting for me. After 3 days of hike, some rest will do good.

Randonnée 5 étoiles. Gros bol avec la météo, sachant que la veille j'étais dans le brouillard à Lenzerheide. Région superbe hélas, ça va encore me donner du travail... Demain, un superbe trail le long des lacs.

5 stars hike. I got very lucky with the weather. The day before I was in the fog above Lenzerheide. Magnificient area unfortunately, will give me more work... Tomorrow, a fantastic trail along these lakes.
