Pollux

Mi-août je suis parti avec Benoît faire des beaux 4000 de Zermatt. Le plan: traversée des Breithorn. En apéritif, on s'est offert le Pollux (4092 m), que j'avais déjà grimpé en 2013 avec mon guide Seb et ami Dante.

Mid-August, Benoit and I went climbing some nice 4000 above Zermatt. We aimed for the Breithorn traverse. As an apetizer, we climbed Pollux (4092 m), which I climbed back in 2013 with my guide Seb and friend Dante (time flies too fast dude...).

Zermatt > Petit Cervin/Klein Matterhorn > Pollux (PD+) > Refuge des guides d'Ayas.

En se levant à Zermatt j'avais quelques doutes sur le temps... Finalement bonne surprise, une belle inversion thermique. Soleil radieux et vue de malade. Petit Cervin à gauche, Zinalrothorn et Weisshorn au fond.

When I woke up in Zermatt, I had some doubts above the weather... In the end, pleasant surprize and a nice temperature inversion. The sun shines and the view is jaw dropping. Klein Matterhorn on the left, Zinalrothorn and Weisshorn away.

On est passé en Italie. Devant, la chaîne des Breithorn à gauche. Tout au fond, deux jolies mamelles: les Lyskamm. A droite et en avant plan: Pollux et Castor.

Glacier joliment crevassé. On a suivi une trace un peu compliquée, même dû sortir les broches pour passer une rimaye. On s'amuse !

That glacier is pretty crevassy. We followed a complicated track at first, even had to use our ice screws to pass a bergschrund. Having fun!

On s'est bien rapproché des jumeaux. On va grimper le Pollux, le sommet à gauche, en montant son arête SW, qui descends du sommet à sa droite.

We got closer to the twins. We'll climb Pollux, that peak on the left, by ascending its SW ridge (right side of the mountain).

C'est parti. Le début est simple.

Here we go. The start is easy.

Quelques passages intéressants. On finit par enlever ces fichus crampons, pour mieux profiter du bon rocher. C'est ni très dur ni trop aérien ou exposé. Juste comme il faut.

Some interesting rocky sections. We took off the bloody crampons to fully enjoy the nice rock. It's not hard or too exposed, just as it should.

Quelques chaînes pour passer les passages un peu raides. Y a tout ce qu'il faut pour protéger sinon.

Some chains to get passed the steep parts. All you need to protect otherwise is there.

Finish sur arête élégante en neige.

Et voila ! Un super sommet avec une vue géniale ! Le premier 4000 de Benoît si je me rappelle bien. S'en est sorti comme un champion.

J'avais déjà fait, mais le faire en tête, en prenant soin d'un second, c'est une autre expérience. Ça reste de l'alpinisme peu difficile et donc que du plaisir. On va profiter de l'hospitalité italienne et de bonnes pâtes ! Demain, fini de rire.

I already did it, but to lead it is quite a different experience. It's still easy mountaineering and therefore just pleasure. We'll enjoy italian hospitality and good pastas. Tomorrow, it's the real thing.
