Début juillet, j'ai emmené deux compères faire un spaghetti tour. Kesako? C'est un tour d'alpinisme populaire de plusieurs jours du coté italien (=pasta) du Mont Rose. Bref, premier de 4 jours de rêve avec de supers conditions. On va commencer par grimper le Castor (4223 m) pour aller dormir en Italie.
Early July, I took two friends for a spaghetti tour. Huh? It's a famous mountaineering trip across Switzerland and Italy (=pasta), near Monte Rosa. So this is day one of a 4 days dreamy trip where we got great conditions. We'll start climbing Castor (4223 m) to get to an italian hut.
Klein Matterhorn (3880m) > Castor > Felikjoch > Rifugio Quintino Sella (3585 m).
Un spaghetti tour ça commence et ça finit à Zermatt, la perle du Valais. Les années passent et le tourisme de masse l'envahit toujours un peu plus. Ne cherchez pas les alpinistes ou même les randonneurs, ils ont disparus. On était quasi les seuls à se promener. Bref, le temps de dire bonjour au Cervin, on embarque dans le téléphérique pour le Petit Cervin.
A spaghetti tour starts and ends in Zermatt, the pearl of Valais. Years pass by and mass tourism spreads here. Don't look for mountaineers or even hikers, there are gone. We were almost the only ones wandering in Zermatt. Anyways, just said hi to Matterhorn and hopped in a cable-car, heading to Klein Matterhorn.

Fraîchement débarqués du Petit Cervin, nous voila sur le glacier Breithornplateau. En face, le sommet occidental du Breithorn (4164 m). Clairement le plus facile des 4000 des Alpes. Encore faut-il qu'il fasse beau. En cas de brouillard ici, les choses peuvent se compliquer singulièrement. Ne pas sous estimer.

Arrivés au Breithornpass (3813 m), on entre en Italie et la vue s'éclaire. La chaîne du Breithorn sur la gauche. Tout au fond le Lyskamm, puis les jumeaux Pollux et Castor (à droite). J'ai grimpé Pollux en 2013, aujourd'hui c'est le tour du frère jumeau :-).

Le plan était de faire la voie normale qui débute au col des Jumeaux, passe par l'arête NW, puis l'antécime et une arête effilée en neige qui rejoint le sommet à droite. En s'approchant je trouve cette arête bien cornichée. Je vois aussi de belles traces qui montent dans la face W et une cordée qui descends tranquille. L'équipe fut unanime, c'est parti pour la face W !
The plan was the normal route, which starts at the twins pass, then up the NW ridge, then pre-summit, then narrow snowy ridge then summit. Getting closer, I looked at that corniche below that narrow ridge, then I also looked at these nice tracks on the W face, with people easily walking down. Team decision: west face, here we go!

Montée parfois assez raide, la glace n'est pas très loin parfois. Rien de bien sérieux mais faut bien cramponner.
It was pretty steep sometimes and the ice wasn't far away. Nothing too serious but you gotta use these crampons.
Dernière croupe pour le sommet. Tout va bien.

La chaîne du Lyskamm. Le lendemain, on n'ira pas chercher les ennuis à la traverser. A la place, on traversera le Naso del Lyskamm (4272m, N en rouge sur la photo) pour rejoindre la prochaine cabane. C'est beaucoup moins exposé...
Lyskamm range. Tomorrow, we won't look for troubles traversing it. Instead, we'll traverse Naso del Lyskamm (4272m, red N on the pic) to get to the next hut. It's much less exposed.

On poursuit la traversée du Castor, direction le Felikjhoch. Très sympa l'arête entre les deux. Rien d'impressionnant, juste du plaisir.
Castor traverse continues, heading now to Felikjoch. Playfull and easy ridge in between. Nothing scary, just fun.

Descente. La neige ramollit. Et vue la quantité, on sent qu'on va galérer.
Downhill. Snow gets softer and there's lots of it. This won't be fun.
Au moins le refuge est en vue et la trace évidente. Les nuages arrivent, il est temps de rentrer.
At least the hut is on sight and the track obvious. Clouds are coming, time to escape.
Notre sommet, coté italien. On a plutôt galéré à la descente, neige molle et profonde. Quelques glissades :-)

Refuge Quintino Sella. Pas trop aimé ce refuge... Froid, vieillot, nourriture limite et assiettes/couverts etc tout en plastique (bien bizarre).
Quintino sella hut. I didn't like it much. Cold, old, borderline food, plates/cutlery all in plastic (weird...).
Awesome day and nice start for the tour! I really liked the climb up to Castor, nice atmosphere in there. Tomorrow, Naso del Lyskamm and Gnifetti hut.
