Au programme de samedi dernier, une jolie course de rochers avec Anthony, qui faisait son baptême d'alpinisme. Météo radieuse et journée pleine d'émotions ! Direction la Suisse centrale, entre Engelberg et Melchsee-Frutt avec une belle crête aérienne, le Sunnigberg, qui aboutit au Nünalphorn.
On last Saturday agenda, a nice rocky ridge with Anthony, who's joining me for a first mountaineering experience. Stunning weather and day full of emotions! Heading to central Switzerland, up to a ridge, between Engelberg and Melchsee-Frutt, leading to Nünalphorn._____________________________________
Garé à Turren, dans la vallée de Melchtal. Direction Engelberg via Rütisalp, puis suivi la crête Sunnigberg. Échappée malheureuse avant le mur du Nünalphorn, direction Juchli puis retour à la voiture. Course PD/PD+
Parked in Turren, in Melchtal valley. Hike up towards Engelberg, via Rütialp, then followed Sunnigberg ridge. Uneasy way down before Nünalphorn final wall, heading to Juchli and back down to the car. PD/PD+ climb
C'est parti pour 1200 mètres de marche d'approche. Au début sur route fermière, direction Rütialp.
Here we go, 1200 meters of approach walk. At first on farmers roads, heading to Rütisalp.
Bonjour le Pilatus.
Rütialp. Au fond, la région de Melchsee-Frutt. La belle pointe du Haupt et au fond la crête du Gloggüs. C'est calme, pas un chat à l'horizon.
Rütialp. Ahead is Melchsee-Frutt area. The nice pointy mount is Haupt, on the background that's the Gloggüs ridge. It's quiet, no one around.
La crête du Sunnigberg apparaît assez vite. Le Nünalphorn, tout à droite, parait assez raide vu d'ici !
Soon the Sunnigberg ridge appeared. Mount Nünalphorn, on the very right hand side, looks quite steep from there!

En moins de 2 heures, nous voila au col "Bocki-Rotisand", à 2200 mètres.
In less than 2 hours, we made it the "Bocki-Rotisand" pass, at 2200 meters.
De l'autre coté, c'est le secteur d'Engelberg. Vue imprenable sur le Titlis et le lac Trübsee.
On the other side, that's the Engelberg area. Nice view on Mount Titlis and lake Trübsee.
La crête démarre. Quelques conseils à Anthony et on s'encorde. C'est parti ! Suis tout excité.
And that's the start of the ridge. Some last advise to Anthony and we are roped up, ready to climb! I'm excited.
La crête est pas mal pour faire ses premiers pas en alpinisme et apprendre à se protéger avec la corde.
That ridge is ok to start mountaineering and learn how to protect yourself with the rope.
Les pas d'escalade sont très simples (II / III), rien de bien dur. Par contre c'est très exposé. Quelques centaines de mètre de vide sous mon pied. Sympa nan ?
The climb itself is very easy (II / III), nothing bad, really. However it is very exposed. A few hundreds meters of emptiness below my foot. Nice isn't it ?
Engelberg.
La difficulté alterne entre le II et le III. Moi je m'amuse. Anthony est en pleine découverte, y va doucement et s'en sort plutôt bien.
So difficulty is between II and III. For me it's pure fun. It's all new for Anthony, he went slow but did quite ok.
Et cette crête continue comme ça pendant pas mal de temps. Quelques gendarmes sont évitables. Au fond, le Huetstock.
And the ridge continues like that for quite a while. Some gendarmes you can avoid. On the background that's Huetstock.
Pause déjeuner au sommet de Sunnigberg, Le Nünalphorn (2385 m) est maintenant en vue. Je cherche une voie. De loin, l'éboulis central et les cheminées au dessus m’apparaissent les moins dangereux. Perspective trompeuse en fait, j'aurais mieux fait de passer par la pente herbeuse forme de faucille. Ça aurait été plus facile.
Lunch break on top of Sunnigberg. Nünalphorn (2385 m) is now on sight. I stared at it to find a way up. From here, that small scree and the chimney above look the safest. The perspective is deceiving in fact, I should have taken that sickle-shaped grassy slope instead. It would have been easier.
L'Oberland.
Vers le nord-ouest, Sarnen et Pilatus. Le Jura au fond. A l’œil nu, on voyait les Vosges. Journée magnifique donc, vision à des centaines de kilomètres.
Looking north-west, Sarnen and Pilatus. Jura on the background. With the naked eye, we saw the Vosges. Amazing day so, seing hundreds kilometers away.

Passage en descente légèrement épicé.

Méditation.
On vient de passer une petite cheminée un peu compliquée, juste au dessus de l'éboulis dont je parlais. Un passage de IV je pense. Amusante à monter en premier. Anthony l'a passé tout juste mais est cramé. Mauvais choix de route de ma part. Chaque erreur se paye cash quand on emmène un débutant.
We just passed that not-so-easy chimney above the scree. It's probably IV. Was fun to lead it. Anthony made it too but barely and burnt out. My bad, wrong route... When you bring a beginner, you cannot afford to make bad decisions.
Et nous voila au pied du mur final. Si proche et pourtant si loin. De l'autre coté on trouve des pentes herbeuses faciles. On reste un moment à se demander où ça passe et Anthony finit par me convaincre de s'échapper. Il n'a plus de forces. C'est la mauvaise décision mais je l'accepte... En fait, le mur est beaucoup simple qu'il n'y parait, ça reste du III. Là encore, perspective un peu trompeuse. Ça passe au centre, sur les pentes herbeuses. Les topos disent tous qu'on est un peu surpris de la facilité à laquelle ça passe finalement.
And now we stand before the final wall. So close and still so far away. On the other side, gentle grassy slopes to go down. We stayed there a moment, wondering how to make that. Anthony eventually convinced me to escape. He was burnt out. It's the wrong decision but I accept it. In fact, that wall is much easier than it looks, it's still III. Perspective is again deceiving and the way up on the grassy slopes is doable. All topos I read said they were surprized how easy it turned out.
On s’échappe donc sur la gauche en tentant de rejoindre le chemin qui vient d'Engelberg et monte au col Juchli. Ce fut une belle galère, à chercher son chemin entre des petites barres rocheuses et de l'herbe très raide. Rien de sérieusement dangereux (je serais remonté...) mais une grosse heure très désagréable et quelques égratignures.... Vue d'en bas ça parait stupide, et ça l'était. Le Nünalphorn est à gauche de l'échancrure. Anthony galère dans les pierriers.
So we escaped to the left, trying to reach the path coming up from Engelberg to Juchli pass. It became hell, going down around small rocky ledges and steep grass. Nothing deadly (would have gone up) but a very unsafe unpleasant hour and a few scratches. Seen from below it looks stupid and it was. The Nünalphorn is on the left of that indentation above. Anthony's figthing in the screes.
Après une remontée de 20 minutes, on arrive à Juchli. Y a plus qu'à suivre le chemin pour revenir à la voiture...
20 minutes up and here we are at Juchli pass. Easy way back down to the car now.

L'automne est là, avec ses belles couleurs. Bouquet final avant que la saison s'achève, snif :-(

Journée mitigée. La partie crête était franchement géniale, amusante et exposée. On s'est amusé tout les deux. On a hélas échangé un beau sommet pour une belle galère. Anthony était à sa limite et j'ai pas eu de chance avec mes choix de route. Il s'en sort bien cela dit, c'était pas évident. Ça lui laisse des souvenirs impérissables :-). Et moi quelques leçons... On reviendra et on se le fera ce fichu Nünalphorn !
Mixed feelings. The ridge was simply great, fun and exposed. We both enjoyed it a lot. We unfortunately switched a nice summit for a hellish downhill. Anthony touched his limit and I wasn't so lucky with my route choices. He did good, that wasn't an easy day clearly. He'll get some memories :-). And I learnt too... We'll come back and do the bloody Nünalphorn !N
