Octobre a plusieurs avantages. J'ai un gâteau d'anniversaire à cette époque et la nature nous offre souvent son bouquet final. Pour fêter ça, Jacques et moi on s'attaque à une splendide crête, la Brienzergrat.
October is great in many ways. I usually get a birthday cake and nature offers its grand finale. To celebrate this, Jacques and I tried the gorgeous Brienzergrat, a ridge above lake Brienz.
Depuis le téléphérique qui monte au Brienzer Rothorn (Sörenberg) > Arniberg plus ou moins hors piste > rando bleu/blanc au Wannepass > hors piste sur la Brienzergrat vers Chruterepass > rando rouge/blanc vers le Rothorn. 7h environ.
From Brienzer Rothorn cable-car up (Sörenberg) > Arniberg more or less off piste > blue/white hike up to Wannepass > off piste on Brienzergrat towards Chruterepass > red/white hike up to Rothorn. Took us around 7 hours.
Départ de Sörenberg. La neige recouvre déjà les sommets. On est équipé pour, ça tombe bien.
Start from Sörenberg. Snow covers already the summits. It's alright, we brought the gear.
On randonne tranquille sur le flanc nord du Brienzer rothorn. Bon échauffement.
Easy stroll on the north flank of Brienzer Rothorn. Nice warm up.
L'essentiel du dénivelé aujourd'hui commence. C'est une randonnée bleu/blanc (alpine). Ça se respecte déjà en temps normal, vu les conditions il faudra être prudent.
The main uphill starts now. It's a blue/white trail (alpine). Usually you'd respect it, today extra caution is advised due to the conditions.
Au nord ouest, Hohgant et Schrattenflue. Et au milieu coule une rivière, l'Emme. Emmental ! Sa source est proche d'ailleurs, sur les flancs nord de l'Augstmatthorn.
North west, Hohgant and Schrattenflue. And a river runs through it, the Emme. Emmental! Its source is close actually, further north near the Augstmatthorn.
Pas trop aimé ce passage... Traversée en devers, enneigée, détrempée, gadouilleuse et donc glissante à souhait. On sors le piolet, bizarrement pas encore les crampons alors qu'ils auraient probablement bien aidé. On va très lentement, l'exposition augmente au fur et à mesure et devient dangereuse.
Can't say I liked this part. Slippery traverse on steep, snowy, mud and grass. We used the ice axe. Strangely enough not the crampons yet, that would have been a good idea. We go pretty slow as it gets more and more exposed, becoming quite dangerous.
La fin est même très raide. On a perdu un peu la trace bleue donc on fait comme on peut. Le piolet nous sauve...
The end is very steep. We lost the blue markers for a while and did what we could. Ice axe saved us.
Arrivé au col Wannepass (2069m). Ouf !

On jette un coup d’œil au Tannhorn (sommet avec la croix à droite) que l'on comptait visiter en aller/retour. C'est une jolie arête très fine et assez raide. Pas vraiment en conditions là donc on renonce.
We planned to climb Tannhorn (that peak with a cross on the right hand side), back and forth from the pass. It's an elegant, narrow and steep ridge. Not quite in conditions today so rain check :-)
La suite c'est par là: plein est sur la Brienzergrat. On devine le Brienzer Rothorn tout au loin. Au début on est donc hors piste, ce n'est pas une randonnée officielle balisée. Cela dit on voit des traces anciennes de balisage rouge/blanc et il y a une sente évidente. C'est bien exposé mais y a la place pour les pieds ! Un petit piolet aide quelque soit la saison. Pas besoin de corde à priori...
Next? Brienzergrat eastward. You can see the Brienzer Rothorn in the distance. At first, it's off piste, not an official marked trail. However, you see old traces of markers and there's an obvious path. It's quite exposed but there's room for your feet! An ice axe may help, no matter which season. You probably don't need a rope here...

Les passages raides m'ont rendu nerveux, faut pas faire toboggan ici. Un moment j'en ai eu marre de la neige/herbe/terre glissante, j'ai mis les crampons. Bonne idée, adhérence au top après :-)
The steep parts made me nervous, you can't slide here. At some point I got pissed off with the slippery snow/grass/mud, so I put my crampons on. Good decision, much better adherence then :-)
Le temps se dégage tout doucement, conditions de rêve à présent. Léger foehn chaud qui souffle.

Coté nord, vue sur Sörenberg en bas. Je vois aussi mon joli Fürstein.

Ca doit être le Chruterepass, un sentier balisé rouge/blanc passe dans le coin, sur la gauche de l'arête. On a préféré grimpouillé un peu :-).

En face, la Schrattenflue, insolente de beauté avec son calcaire brillant recouvert d'une fine couche de neige. Lumière de rêve.
Ahead, the Schrattenflue is outrageously beautiful, shiny limestone and thin snow layer. Golden light.
Et là le clou du spectacle: un couloir en neige! Jacques exulte et ouvre dans une belle neige bien raide. Ça passe vers la trouée au-dessus, nous sommes sur le sentier rouge officiel. Y a des câbles et même un escalier sous la neige :-)
And now the cherry on the pie: a snowy couloir! Jacques is ecstatic and leads on deep and steep snow. Heading to that hole above. We are on the red/white path, there's cables and even stairs below the snow :-)

Nord-est/north-east: Pilatus, Rigi, Stanserhorn.
Ouest: lac de Brienz, l'un des plus beau de Suisse. L'Oberland bernois derrière, avec l'Eiger par exemple. On devine jusqu'au Wildhorn.
West: lake Brienz, one of the fairest in Switzerland. Berner Oberland behind (e.g. Eiger). You can see up to Wildhorn.
Sud-est/south-east: Meiringen, Sustenhorn et Dammastock.
Today's heroes before the Brienzergrat. It's a long one. I tried it already in summer conditions from Harder Kulm (above Interlaken). Got too hot and tired so I quit in the middle. This time we did the other half. I really want to do it all from the Rothorn down to Interlaken.
Retour vers/down to Sörenberg.
Ça devient difficile pour moi de dire qu'elles furent les plus belles sorties cette année. Cette arête est vraiment magnifique à faire, décor époustouflant. C'est jamais très dur, y compris sur les passages hors pistes. On ne met les mains que rarement. Faut juste pas glisser... Super journée, merci Jacques !
It's getting difficult for me to say which climbs I liked the most this year. This ridge is really incredible, amazing scenery. It's never hard, even on the off piste parts. You barely use your hands. But you can't afford to slip...
